Question about 1999 BMW 318 ti
I have a similar problem with my 1999 (T) 328ci e46, i dont have the battery light come on, just the rev counter jumping between below 1 and 3 revs. it will do this intermitantly but very very regular. even if the card warm it will still do it when i stop at traffic lights etc. iv taken it to ocean bmw twice and they blamed it on two split hoses which they changed which they had thought solved it but it hadnt. iv taken it to 2 specialist bmw garages who cant explian it and said apart from that the car runs lovely. i aint happy with this and wondered if anyone could offer me a solution.
At the back of the airflow mass follow the pipe there's a rubber boots theres your problem is it goes to the engine it always have a hole there by the belt rubbing with it. Sometime letting in air go thought like bypass which it shouldn't do.

There are really only 2 things that cause this problem, one of course is a defective Tachometer and the other is that u have a electrical leak at one of the plug wires, u may not feel a miss but when the leak occurs it emits radio radiation and will cause the tach needle to jump, I have seen it many times.
