Question about 1993 Buick LeSabre

Hose from water pump to intake manifold above and behind water pu

Connector that goes into manifold has broken off at manifold. can this be replaced and what is it called? It's made of plastic. does it just screw in and out? It is just above water pump behind the alternator. 93 lesabre custom.

    I have a 92 buick century with the same problem. The official name of the connector is called a thermostat bypass connector (according to the buick parts dept.) it ran 42 dollars for the part. Ouch!!

    There is a plastic hose on back bottom side of intake manifold vacume can't find where it goes starting problems

This is a water pump bypass hose connector to the manifold, take the broken piece to a parts store and show it to them, it should have the threads still broken off in the manifold so explain that. To remove the broken piece ask for a EZ OUT to fit the piece you took to the store.
It is common for these to become brittle and break off but it is a simple fix.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.

  2. NOTE: Refer to Section 1 of this manual for the cylinder head torque sequence illustration. The illustration is located after the Torque Specification Chart.
  3. NOTE: Lubricate the cylinder head bolts with clean engine oil for assembly.
  4. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket. Tighten the bolts in sequence as follows:
  5. Step 1: 58 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
  6. Step 2: 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm)

    Intake Manifold gasket~

    Replacing intake manifold gasket:
    Replacing the intake manifold gasket, I used the tube kind, it's a make it youself for about $6 (it's blue and the consistancy of toothpaste) follow directions carefully! You can get a tube at Autozone or any car parts store. Has been working great. Just ask the cashier for the make it yourself kind of intake manifold gasket. Sorry, I don't remember the name of it, it's been that long...lol...

    As for the Intake Manifold leaking coolant....It could, but shouldn't. One of the largest problems I've seen for coolant to leak out the Intake Manifold has been due to pressure in the system somewhere... Check the classic area:
    Water pump- look for either water seapage and/or coolant. You'll know if it is because you will see real water either coming out of the water pump leak hole or under the thermostat. Most of the time coolant will pool where your heater hose runs in the intake manifold.

    Mentioning heater hose. Check for leaks, holes, and/or cracked heater hoses. In-addition to the water pump, heater hoses...Check the transmission system, exhaust system, fuel system, radiator system, A/C system, secondary fan (located above the water pump housing), and thermostat.Also, check all electrical connections....Hummm....This is almost the entire workings of the vehicle.

    NOTE: "It seems to be an infinity kinda thing... Once one thing starts to fail and is ignored, you are bound to be fixing a chain of event failures. Therefore, Do not ignore even the smallest problem or you'll be bound for life in repairs...."

    I am seeing water behind the pump on the top of the motor in the v under all the fuel injection / intake is that normal for water pump to leak there if its bad?


    its not normal. the water pump will leak in front, not back. There is a pipe and hose down in the VEE that can leak. If the pipe is bad, you will need to remove the pump to replace it. The intake manifold will need to come off, to replace the pipe/ hose. the hose connects a pipe behind the water pump to a pipe at the rear of the block to a heater hose.

    Cant find heater hose cand find the one from water pump


    I believe the reason that you are not able to find the hose coming from the water pump is because you haven't removed your intake manifold yet. The hose comes out directly behind the pump and runs under the intake to the back of the engine. Do you need to repair it? If repair is needed make sure you have a torque wrench and a sequence order for removing and installing the manifold bolts. I hope I could be of some help to you.

    Water leak, trying to figure out if it is head or intake manifold casket. There is a flat ridge under the intake manifold and it has antifreeze on it and it is above the head casket, I was thinking this...


    Without checking the head with a pressure test anything is possible. do a compression check on the cylinders and see if you have high compression on a cylinder. If the head is cracked it will let water into the cylinder and cause high pressure. This is still true with a broken intake manifold gasket as well though depending where it is broken. It is possible that what you are seeing is blow back from the radiator over flow. You don't see any leaks when your stationary but if you drive it and then stop and check it you see the fluid. This could be a result of blow back from a loose radiator cap or bad over flow hose.

    Cylinder Head Removal & Installation SOHC To Remove:
    1. Relieve fuel system pressure.
    2. Remove timing belt cover. Camshaft timing marks kia-03-20-7032.gif

    3. Turn crankshaft until timing mark on front housing and the arrow "2" on the camshaft pulley align.
    4. Loosen lock bolt on tensioner.
    5. Pry tensioner away from timing belt and tighten lock bolt to relieve tension on the timing belt.
    6. Remove timing belt from camshaft pulley.
    7. Disconnect battery negative cable.
    8. Remove 3 bolts that secure accelerator cable and air intake hose to cylinder head cover.
    9. Detach accelerator cable and place off to side.
    10. Remove the following;
      • Air hose
      • Air ISC air hose
      • Breather hose
      • Vacuum hose from air intake hose
    11. Disconnect mass air flow sensor electrical connector.
    12. Remove air intake hose.
    13. Remove PCV valve from cylinder head cover.
    14. Remove ISC air hose from idle speed actuator.
    15. Remove air hose from behind intake manifold.
    16. Remove 2 screws from high tension wire protectors.
    17. Detach wire loom from holder at rear of cylinder head cover.
    18. Detach vacuum tube at rear of cylinder head cover.
    19. Remove vacuum pipe. Cylinder Head Cover kia-03-20-7042.gif

    20. Remove 7 cylinder head cover bolts.
    21. Remove cylinder head cover and gasket.
    22. Disconnect 2 ignition coil electrical connectors.
    23. Disconnect 2 fuel injection electrical connectors at rear of cylinder head.
    24. Disconnect the following electrical connectors;
      • Oxygen sensor
      • Throttle position sensor
      • Idle speed actuator
      • Oil pressure switch
      • EGR vacuum solenoid valve at intake manifold
    25. Disconnect heater hose from elbow.
    26. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose and cruise control vacuum hose from surge tank.
    27. Detach wire harness from rear of cylinder head.
    28. Disconnect purge control solenoid vacuum hose from intake manifold.
    29. Disconnect fuel hose from fuel connector assembly.
    30. Remove grounding bracket.
    31. Remove 4 bolts and intake manifold bracket.
    32. Remove starter.
    33. Detach water bypass hose from bypass pipe.
    34. Disconnect water hoses from oil cooler.
    35. Disconnect fuel hose from fuel pipe.
    36. Remove exhaust manifold heat shield.
    37. Remove exhaust flange nuts and front exhaust bracket bolt.
    38. Lower exhaust system. Cylinder head bolt loosening sequence kia-03-20-7050.gif

    39. Loosen cylinder head bolts in 3 steps in proper sequence.
    40. Remove cylinder head bolts and washers.
    41. Remove cylinder head, intake manifold and exhaust manifold as an assembly.
    To Install:
    1. Install NEW cylinder head gasket.
    2. Install cylinder head, intake manifold and exhaust manifold as an assembly.
    3. Tighten cylinder head bolts in 3 steps in reverse sequence that was used during removal. Tighten bolts to 62 ft lb (84 Nm).
    4. Install front exhaust bracket bolt. Tighten bolt to 20 ft lb (27 Nm).
    5. Install NEW lower exhaust flange gasket and 3 nuts. Tighten nuts to 24 ft lb (31 Nm).
    6. Install exhaust manifold heat shield. Tighten nuts to 35 in lb (4 Nm).
    7. Connect fuel hose to pipe.
    8. Connect 2 hoses to oil cooler.
    9. Attach water bypass hose to bypass pipe.
    10. Install starter and bolts. Tighten bolts to 34 ft lb (46 Nm).
    11. Install intake manifolds bracket and 4 bolts. Tighten bolts to 32 ft lb (45 Nm).
    12. Install grounding bracket.
    13. Connect fuel hose to fuel connector assembly.
    14. Connect the following electrical connectors;
      • Oxygen sensor
      • Throttle position sensor
      • Idle speed actuator
      • Oil pressure switch
      • EGR vacuum solenoid valve at intake manifold
    15. Connect purge control solenoid vacuum hose to intake manifold.
    16. Attach wire harness from rear of cylinder head.
    17. Connect brake booster vacuum hose and cruise control vacuum hose to surge tank.
    18. Connect heater hose to elbow.
    19. Connect 2 fuel injection electrical connectors at rear of cylinder head.
    20. Connect 2 ignition coil electrical connectors.
    21. Install cylinder head cover.
    22. Install 7 cylinder head cover bolts. Tighten bolts to 60 in lb (7 Nm).
    23. Install vacuum pipe and 2 bolts at rear of cylinder head cover. Tighten bolts to 60 in lb (7 Nm).
    24. Connect vacuum tube to pipe.
    25. Connect loom holder to rear of cylinder head cover.
    26. Install 2 screws to high tension wire protectors.
    27. Install air hose to behind intake manifold.
    28. Install ISC air hose to idle speed actuator.
    29. Install PCV valve to cylinder head cover.
    30. Install air intake hose.
    31. Connect mass air flow sensor electrical connector.
    32. Install the following;
      • Air hose
      • Air ISC air hose
      • Breather hose
      • Vacuum hose from air intake hose
    33. Attach accelerator cable.
    34. Install 3 bolts that secure accelerator cable and air intake hose to cylinder head cover. Timing belt pulley timing marks kia-03-20-7035.gif

      NOTE: Timing belt pulley timing mark and timing mark must be aligned.
      Camshaft timing marks kia-03-20-7032.gif

      NOTE: The arrow at "2" on camshaft pulley must be aligned with timing mark on front housing.
    35. Install timing belt.
    36. Install timing belt cover.
    37. Pressurize fuel system.
    38. Start engine and check ignition timing.

    There is a leak in the bypass hose spout behind the


    I have a perminent better solution to this problem. The broken part is out there however, its on "back order". The fix that I have done is to remove the water pump and "punch" out the broken piece from above. Then use a 3/8" pipe thread tap and put threads in that hole. Go to your nearest auto parts house and purchase a "heater hose nipple". Then, with a deep well socket and a long extention, thread the nipple in. Install the hose and clamp it at both ends. You can tap that hole because its cast aluminum.

    it could but- check passenger side front where heater core line go into manifold right behind alternator the hose line is connected by a press clip into an alloy fitting this fitting gets eaten away by anti freeze and hose angle pulls back on fitting the part is $18 at dealer and is screwed into manifold use caution if ur r going to replace at very edge of aluminum manifold---and check ur water pump bolts the 2 longer ones should have a lock sealant on them they bolt in thru a water jacket
