My 2000 Toyota Fourrunner made a super loud knocking sound when I was driving on the highway?

It is hard to say at this range. If a heavy knocking noise that gets louder if you rev up a bit, and it seems to keep time with the engine, you have a failed con-rod (big end) bearing, or less likely, a failed crank main bearing. A lighter knock may be a failed gudgeon pin (small end) bearing. Another possibility is that the engine has eaten a valve or 2.

A blown head gasket can make a noise but it is more like a 'chuff-chuff' sound, like a steam engine.

If the noise has nothing to do with engine revs, look for a loose road wheel or a failed axle bearing, but I doubt it is that.

If you decide it is the engine, the quickest way to investigate is to drain and remove the sump, and look at the big-end bearings. To investigate the valves you could use a borescope, before going to the trouble of removing the cylinder head.

3.1L has rod knock. I have 20yrs of auto mechanic and built a few engines, but retired now.

If the knocking is from the bottom of the engine, it may be the big end bearings have worn.
Replace them or not? Difficult question.

Replacing the big end (crankshaft/piston rod) bearings may stop the knocking/rumble noise. It depends on the crankshaft..

If the crankshaft has worn oval on its journals, fitting new bearings is unlikely to achieve anything as the bearings may break up due to the oval of the crankshaft. Removing the crankshaft and checking the journals for ovality/regrinding if necessary isn't a 5 minute job.

You say you have good oil pressure. That's a positive.

Personally, in your situation, I would try an engine oil additive that's designed to eliminate knock provided the main bearings haven't worn down to base metal. It's the cheapest option.

Failing that - and again, personally - I would remove the oil pan and fit new big end bearings in the hope that it would work.

The next step, if that doesn't work - would be to remove the crankshaft and have it reground and fit oversize bearings. Or get a 2nd hand engine...

You say the car was given to you for free .. you have nothing to lose. Try an additive first.. molyslip/molybdenum or whatever...

Good luck ...

My nissan murano locked up going down road. Engin was running fine it started a little knock before it locked up 2003 model. Thanks. Can a starter cause this problem

Sounds like you ran out of oil and have seized the big end bearings. The knock before they seize. Could also be an inoperative oil pump.

Get it towed to a garage.

I have an 06 Hyundai Sonata when driving down the road 30 miles per hour I have a knocking sound coming from under the hood

You need to take it to a garage as soon as possible. Knocking from the engine bay usually means sever problems. catch it before it gets worse

My son thinks his a mechanic experimenting ,place a fan as big as palm size in the air induction hose ,he start the escalade and test drive ,he heard a grinding and then knocking sound in the engine, then...

could be the oil pump has failed grinding sound then knocking sound could also be the timing is out or failing that something forren has got into the engine. check all these out and don't run the engine you are making the engine worse. if pump for the oil has gone and the engine has been run can mean a new engine. if timing belt has moved could be a new head will be needed. and pistons. failed oil pump does more damage in the long run as the hole engine needs oil.

Engine is making loud knocking noise what does this means

could be various things wrong, could be bottom end big end bearing. you need to establish where the knock is ( top end or bottom end ). if it is big end thats knocking then its an engine change ( saves messing about ) or top end ( camshaft ) then its a mornings job. hope this helps
