2006 Chevy Colorado, rough idle when cold

When I first start the engine, and it is cold it has an extremely rough idle. I need to step on the gas slightly until it warms up or else it wants to stall. If the engine is warm and is started it idles just fine. any help or suggestions with this problem would be greatly appreciated, thanks

This is in regaurds to my '06 Chevy Colorado With the rough cold start. The head was replaced at approx. 55,000 miles, I now have about 66, it's been a year, the check engine light has been on ever since the head has been replaced. My cold start problem started about 2 months ago, and has been steadily getting worse. I would appreciate any kind of feedback. thanks

SOURCE: how do i change out the knock sensor on a 2006 chevy colorado

You didn't list your engine size so please pick the applicable to your motor size:

Removal & Installation 2.8L & 2.9L Engines To Remove:

  1. Lift the vehicle high enough to gain access to the knock sensor (KS) through the left front wheelhouse.
  2. Remove the left front wheel and wheelhouse liner.
Knock sensor (KS) (A), Engine harness (B), Knock sensor (KS) connector (C)

if it runs high when you first start it then mellows out,, theirs no problem , all of our chevys do that.... but if its sputtering or you hear a quiet popping noise check spark plugs

SOURCE: Rough idle

I had the same exact problem on my 2004 Colorado (3.5L). Cleaned the MAF sensor (with MAF sensor cleaner) and throttle body/plate - cleared it right up.

#1 - do you change your antifreeze every year? #2 - let your vehicle competely warm up before putting your engine under load. If you've got kids, go through starting the car safely step-by-step and send them out to start it - that's how my grandpa got me interested in cars!

1992 Chevy S10 2.5L-4 cylinder. just started today outta no were. it idles really rough and pops then when i step on the gas it sputters and pops also smokes a little. help please..

My 1990 S10 pick-up had a similar problem too. It would start up fine (while the engine was cold) then once the engine warmed up it would idle very rough, sputter, and even stall out. My grandpa and I found what was wrong finally. The fuel distributor had been cracked, so when the engine warmed up it would miss (giving either too much or not enough fuel). So I recommend that you check that. Hope this helps.

When warm the car does not idle. when its cold it starts and drives fine. when it warms up it shuts off and idles rough.

Find the egr valve on the intake. Look up on the internet what it looks like because it is difficult to describe. There will be one vacuum hose attached to it. Start the car and let it warm up. when it starts to hesitate remove the hose. If the engine holds idle, you need to replace the egr valve. The egr (EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION) valve allows the engine to re burn the exhaust gas when the engine is cold to clean up the emissions at the tail pipe. They tend to get stuck in one position from carbon build up and need replacement.

Engine is running rough at idle; making slight "popping" sound; can see rpm's on the tach jump slightly

have you checked the EGR (exhaist gas recirculation) valve? sometimes carbon will chip off and make them stick partially open causing extremely rough idle or wont idle at all without help from throttle

Chugs, acts like it's not getting gas once warmed up. Idle's fine

This problem can be several things. When your engine is cold, your computer is in a "closed loop" and just pretty much keeps the engine running until warmed up. After reaching operation temperature, the computer starts reading all the sensors. If one sensor is not connected or is defective, you will experience performance problems. Most of the time this will turn on the check engine light, but not always. Second is the fuel pump. This too will cause erratic engine problems.

Rough idling and choke

the only thing that can cause this is maybe you have a bad planium gasket but before changing this you could also have gotten some bad gas cause most gas have 12% water or more so try STP gas treatment first
