Why do my car slow down going up hills.and go normal on straight roads

sounds to me it could be a plugged catalytic converter. the symptoms are runs good , no strain, or on the flats, then loses power with exertion, or long uphill to the point you think it's going to just quit on you. easy test is to unbolt the catalytic inlet, and give it a quick test run. sometimes you can tell by having someone race the engine while you monitor the exhaust to see if enough comes out of it. usually happens over 75,000 miles

My 98 x3 Hyundai Excel manual DOHC has just started losing power coming up hills. It feels like you've gone into gear too soon, but I havent. It also starts jerking. No lights come on either.

Hi Karina, Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair.

Karina, it sounds like the "Clutch is Slipping" several things can cause this. (1) The clutch could be slipping under load going up the hill because it has oil on it, "Due To An Oil Leak". (2) The Slave Cylinder could be going bad or it could have air in the system due to a seal leak or low on fluid. Sounds internail, Hopefully it's just maybe a rod bolt come lose. But could also be the camshaft, Check and see if your still getting fire to plugs, If camshaft is busted it will not fire. Befor you have any work done be sure to get a sec, opinion and price quote. Best of luck to you.
