I have found an answer to my question a gmc jimmy with 4 wheel drive has the deep transmission fluid pan the 2 wheel drive the shallow as for looking in chiltons or haynes they were absolutely no help at all, as to being important try and fit the wrong tranny filtre in your vehicle there is a big diffrence

to karsmart92 if the depth of the pan is unimportant why would there be two pans one deep and one shallow this has nothing to do with checking the fluid levels and everything to do with changing the filtre plus i have recently found that the deep fluid pan is for the 4x4 trans mission mated to the 4.3 litre vortec engine so the depth of the pan is actually very important and there is two different filtres a long neck/4x4,and a short neck/2x4 ther is nothing in the manuals about this.

go to checker and get a chilton or haynes guide for that vehicle or have one of the employees checkwhy do you need to find this out?

The depth of the tranny pan isn't really important. if you want to check the fluid let the vehicle idle and check it while its running unless its manual than you'll have to do it from underneath

How do you change oil pump in 89 gmc 4.3 v6 s15 jimmy

I'm going to simply "spitball" an answer because i don't know WHY you think you need to change the oil pump.

1st, IF the oil pressure gauge isn't showing any pressure, or low pressure, AND there is no engine noises such as knocking or loud tapping, I would suspect a faulty oil pressure sending unit. IF there's a deep knocking sound then an oil pump isn't going to solve the problem. That is UNLESS it turns out to be what I ran across on a 1991 S10 4x4 with a 4.3. There was a "knocking" sound which I traced to the cover plate of the flywheel/flexplate. Turned out to have a cracked flexplate. Changed it and all was good.

I have a 1985 GMC that showed low oil pressure, yet there was no noises coming from the engine to confirm low oil pressure. I changed the pressure sending unit and it fixed the problem of "low oil pressure".

Now IF you're dead set on changing the oil pump, get ready because it isn't a 10 minute job.

You'll more than likely have to at LEAST raise the engine somewhat as (I'm guessing it's 4x4) the oil pan has a deep sump area for the oil pick up. This is so the oil pan can be shallow in the front area to clear the front differential and cross frame area.

Then you get to try to wiggle, twist, wiggle some more, the oil pan out from between the bottom of the engine/crankshaft, and the cross member of the frame AFTER removing all of the bolts that hold the oil pan in place.

IF it were me, I'd be almost inclined to simply pull the engine, at least part way out of the truck, to gain better access to the pan. AND you wouldn't be fighting trying to keep the oil pan gasket in place while doing the wiggle/twist putting the pan back into place.

Hope this helps.

I have a 1994 GMC Jimmy 4.3 vortec 4x4 automatic, and the transmission started to slip, then the battery died, we got it home and it wouldn't start, so we charged the battery and it ran fine for abou

You may potentially have an serious electrical drain in your car circuits. The drain is slow and continuous, draining your battery charge even if you do a start. Check the cabling and look for load on your battery with a Volt meter to check for any charge drainage. Check this as a precaution before replacing any more parts.

Trying to remove oil pan, but the transfer case is in the way of get bolt out, how or what do you have to do to get the oil pan off 1997 blazer 4x4

I;m doing the same on a 4x4 95 yukon. I used a 1/4 drive deep well 3/8 socket and a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter - it was just short enougto ckear transfer case but long enough to clear the pan. But now my pan wont come off because of transfer case in the way. I am looking at lowering transfer case vs raising front of engine- good luck

1998 Blazer Transmission Pan Depth

If the pan is flat all the across it is a regular pan. If it has a step near the back edge and a circular indentation in a front corner (may have a drain plug in it) then it is a deep pan!
