With modern cars it is bad when the engine light just comes on and the vehicle does something very different. It should not be driven. If the car is smelling of fuel and jerking it is because it's miss-firing (i.e. one or more cylinder is not getting spark but is getting fuel). This can be anything from electrical/electronic to mechanical like a broken rotor cap (as an example). The good thing, is that the light is coming on and a mechanic can check the ECU for error codes. Alternatively, you can buy or barrow one your self and check it out on your own (I think even certain auto-part stores will check it for you as long as you get in the zone;). 1996 is a good year for that since that is when OBDII started and all vehicles started using the same port to check for issues.

The flashing check engine light means that you have a serious misfire and you should stop driving the car immediately and have it checked out before you cause damage to the engine or the exhaust system. a serious misfire means that one or more cylinders are not firing and burning the fuel in the cylinder therefor; dumping raw fuel into the exhaust which can create hazardous emissions and damage your catalytic converter. misfires can be caused by a few problems such as, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, ignition coils, and coil module. i'd start by checking for spark at each spark plug if there is no spark at one or more plugs check the wires and coil or distributor (i'm not sure if that car has a distributor or coils) if you have spark check for timing being out of spec.if a timing belt or chain jumped a tooth it will cause a misfire and jerking as well. start with checking those things out, hopefully you find the problem!

You have a major system failure that will destroy your catalytic converter very quickly. you have too much fuel being injected into your engine. Drive directly to the repair shop, have them check for engine control failure codes and fix car.

I had that exact problem on my 03 sentra gxe 1.8L , turned out to be the alternator had died and it was trying to use the battery. Are you having any electrical problems? Because when this was going on with me, the lights would barely work inside and outside the car - new alternator and battery and its been fine ever since

1995 Nissan sentra cutting out when given gas

If it is bad gas you would be able to smell it usually. When gas goes bad it turns to like varnish and the smell ( believe me- once you have smelled it) you will never forget what it smells like. If the engine light is on, check the trouble codes. On a 1995 Nissan Sentra it was the first year of OBD 2 systems so it should have a hookup for the scan tool but if you don't have a scan tool you can still retrieve the codes from the ECU or the check engine light.
Under the dash behind the center console is the ECU. You will need to get to it(Don't disconnect it from it's wiring harness ) Just be able to access it and I believe on the side of the ECU isa Diagnostic Mode Selector which you will move to the left and turn ignition switch to on position(not start) and watch how the check engine light flashes. Sometimes it will flash fast and sometimes slow. Then it will repeat. Example a long beep then 4 quick beeps would be a code 14. Write down what yours is and get back with me. Good luck.
