Check the fuel pressure. On the bright metal fuel rack/line on top of the engine there is a caped nipple to check fuel pressure. IF you don't have a fuel pressure gauge then "I don't suggest" sticking something in the valve to see if fuel spits out. When attaching the gauge and the engine is off there might be some pressure but when the key is turned on (don't start engine) the pressure should rise to 30-40 psi (this changes from make to make). Sticking something in the valve might show you there is a jump in pressure but not the way it should be done. Also you can check for noise from the fuel pump. Most all pumps can be heard especially if you place your ear near the underside where the gas tank is (as most vehicles today have the pump in the tank). Have someone turn the key all the way on but do not start it. You should hear a brief buzz/hiss of the pump and then it will shut off. If you don't hear anything try a solid blow with the side of your fist to the bottom of the fuel tank at the same time as the key is being turned on. This has, in many occasions, brought the pump back to life (if only for a few seconds). I actually was able to get someone their home by doing this but by no means is this a fix. The neutral safety switch is on the selector shaft on the transmission. Look for two sets of wires, one for neutral switch and the other for reverse lights.

My routine to check non-starting motors: (petrol/gas models)

  • Check immobilizer status
  • Check fuel supply -does it reach the fuel rail when starting. If not OK, check 12v supply to fuel pump when starting. If OK, fuel pump maybe dead.If not present, check fuel pump fuse and relay.
  • If fuel supply is OK, check spark ignition. If not OK, follow the supply circuit backwards to the ECM. Coils and/or ignition amplifier connector should have one 12v supply to it when ignition switch is on.
For Diesels with 'common rails' you can take same approach for fuel. No ignition testing possible. The diesel fuel pump still needs battery power. It will make some sound when IGN is on. If not, check ALL fuses and relays.

Check for fuel pressure on the fuel rail while turning the key to start,if there is fuel pressure(enough)then the injectors are not pulsing(allowing fuel into the intake). The pick up coil in the distributor, will be the problem, unless it is distribuless ignition, then the cam sensor would be at fault.

Stop spraying starting fluid! Check the fuse for the fuel pump first. Sounds like you have lost voltage signal to the fuel rail. Turn the key on and loosen one of the fuel line connections to see if there is pressure, ware safety glasses! Keep me posted......

Fuel pump NOT working ,fuel pump is OK,but no voltage

Check the voltage with someone cranking the engine. The fuel pump relay is incorperated in the FI relay located under right center of dash. It is a metal relay usually bolted to the floor near the ecm. Double check all the fuses inside and out

Replaced fuel pump failure

If you can't hear the pump over the door chime, when checking, roll down the window instead of opening the door, or have someone else listen outside the vehicle! To get the relay out, spray some wd 40 or other solvent around the base... it will seep into plug and make it easier to remove. (if it's bad, it will have to come out sooner or later!!)
Did you replace the filter when you did the pump???
