Question about 1989 Ford F 150

1989 f-150 with a 351

Hooked up my flash scanner and codes 33 and 44 popped up. Code 33 is the EGR valve and replaced that. Now code 44 have no idea. Truck spuders. Kinda like my timing is off,but its not. 02 sensor? injecters?

    44 is the AIR system is inop. Do u still have the smog pump hooked up and operating?

Code says bad egr valve replaced still throws code


V6? 4cyl? what is the code? there is no code that says "replace egr valve", the passages may be stopped up. open the egr valve manually (a scanner may be able to do thiis) and see if the engine idles rough or stalls out (it should if passages are flowing) if not you need to take valve off and clean the EGR passages. If you cant open the valve, take it off, one hole is exhaust. the other will be vaccuum, from the intake manifold. A bad map sensor could also cause a egr malfunction code.

Just had my gaskets, and EGR Valve replaced and the code P401 keeps popping up and check engine light will not go out.


I believe this code refers to a fault in EGR flow. In most GM vehicles the EGR flow is measured by the MAP sensor. Have your map sensor checked with a diagnostic scanner that displays real time data. It should read 1-2 volts at idle and should gradually increase with acceleration.

How to clean a egr valve from a 2000 mitsubishi montero. I replace the egr valve, but still engine ligth code 403 still on.


Your new EGR valve (assuming it wasn't defective out of the box), is fine, but the car's computer just needs to have its code 403 cleared. Even though you've corrected the problem, the computer will still light the "Check Engine" light, and store code 403 until the code is cleared using an OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics 2) code scanner.
Note that the car will function perfectly with its new EGR valve, a lit "Check Engine" light and a code 403 stored. Its just a good idea to clear the code, so that then only NEW problems will become the reason that the "Check Engine" light gets lit.

I have a code P0401. What is this and how can I fix it?


P0401 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected

Possible causes - Harness or connectors (EGR volume control valve circuit is open or shorted.)
- EGR volume control valve stuck closed
- EGR volume control solenoid valve
- Dead (Weak) battery
- EGR passage clogged
- Exhaust gas leaks Possible solution - Clean EGR Valve
- Repair EGR harness or connector
- Replaced EGR volume control solenoid valve
- Replaced EGR volume control valve

What is this code P1404 on the dodge ram 1500 mean


That code is the EGR. I'd start by checking for a bad connection on the EGR plug-in. Pull the connector off and inspect each individual terminal inside the plug and the connector pins inside the EGR valve.
I found this solution at another forum on this issue. It worked on my 2001 Grand Am:

"Many GM built cars have a tendency to have the 'Check Engine Soon' light come on as a result of DTC code P1404. P1404 is described as EGR valve pintle stuck open, which in most cases is a false alarm. I had this happen with my '01 Grand Am. A little bit surfing on internet reveals that GM has a solution for the problem, a re-flash for the car's computer.

A software re-flash as a fix kind of indicates that the vehicles with this problem were built with it but I don't think GM will be re-flashing cars outside warranty for free. They will want their $100 for it.

Some hands on people I found had purchased a new EGR valve and changed it but the problem remained.

Possible reason (very likely) for the false P1404 code is that the plastic piston of the EGR valve position instrument (LVDT?) wears over time and starts reading a different position at valve closed than what it was when the EGR valve was first installed.

When the car was built and the computer circuits energized for the first time the computer learned the EGR valve closed position signal from the valve position instrument that is built on top of the valve itself. Over time, when the instrument wears, a slightly different signal is sent to the computer and when it differs enough from the 'Valve Closed Signal', that the computer had learned, the trouble code P1404 is set and the 'Service Engine Soon' light comes on.

Replacing the EGR valve with a new one does not necessarily fix this problem because the 'Valve Closed Signal' between valves is slightly different and it is just pure luck if your new valve would give a 'Valve Closed Signal' close enough to your original valve's signal not to set the trouble code. This is why the new EGR valve 'Valve Closed Signal' must be re-learned by the computer.

So, what this all means is that if the P1404 is a false code meaning that the valve pintle is not stuck open, then new 'Valve Closed Signal' can be re-learned by the computer using the old valve.

For fixing this problem the tool you need to have is a simple OBD II code scanner that can be used to erase trouble codes. There are many scanners of different price range on the market. I purchased one from AutoZone for about $90.

A code scanner is a very handy tool to have and I recommend everybody who is just slightly hands on type of a person to get one. It will end up saving a lot of money over time.

The fix goes like this:

1. Disconnect the wire harness from the EGR valve.

2. Turn key ON and erase the trouble code(s) from the car's computer AND TURN KEY OFF IMMEDIATELY WHEN THE SCANNER SAYS CODES HAVE BEEN ERASED. DO NOT TURN KEY ON BEFORE YOU RE-CONNECT EGR WIRE HARNESS.

3. Re-connect EGR wire harness and your problem should be fixed.

I learned this fix from OBDII.COM where carfixer and kozloski discussed it and I think kozloski was the one who provided the solution, so thanks to them.

There was also other people stating that this fix really works. Now I have joined this group of people as I got mine fixed using this trick also.

I believe erasing codes with wire harness disconnected and turning the key OFF right after P1404 code has been erased re-sets the 'Valve Close Position' reading in the computer and triggers computer to re-learn position next time the key is turned ON.

If you don't have an OBD II scanner and don't want to buy one some car part stores may erase the code for free, but if you have it done there you must tell them about turning the key OFF at the right moment. Other wise the re-learn process does not take place.

flash is misfire than steady is fault code misfire can be from anything from air cleaner clogged to mass air flow sensor to pcv valve,vacuum leak etc u already changed egr need to have scanned for more specific code code number breaks down to emissions mechanical and or manufactures specific code

go to auto zone and ask for a there portable engine dianostic scanner. hook it up under the steering wheel inside the car follow the instuctions and write the code down and clear the code while the scanner is hooked up. if you have an employee do it they will not clear the code. when you go back inside they will run the code and it will give you a pretty close idea of what else could be wrong. egr was replaced but it could be an O2 sensor or your exhaust manifold.

How to replace EGR valve on 2000 camry V6?


If you have a P0401 code from a CEL, the first thing is to check the EGR vacuum modulator. It is a little well usually next to the EGR. Pop the cap off and dust the little sponge inside. Sometimes this gets stuffed up with carbon particles and causes recirculation problems. You should clean the tubes hooked to it while you are there. Reset the code and see if the light comes back.

Replacing the EGR is not a tidy job. It is an expensive part to replace and you will disconnect the three hoses and dismantle it from engine by two nuts. Save it for the later if the previous trick fails to work.

Egr problem


Hi, Eric

Lets tackle the EGR code first. Your vehicle is equipped with an electronic EGR valve, and the code is referring to an error with the pintle position. Your first port of call is to go back to whoever read the codes out and have them reset using this procedure:-

Switch off the ignition
Disconnect the wiring plug from the EGR valve
Connect the scanner
Switch on the ignition
Clear the code using the scanner.

Now this bit is VERY important:- As soon as the scanner tells you the codes are cleared, and I mean that very SECOND, switch off the ignition IMMEDIATELY, or the code will reappear.

You can then disconnect the scanner, reconnect the EGR valve, and then turn on the ignition.

If the code comes back then remove the valve and clean it, and whilst the valve is off, you may as well take the opportunity to clean out the ports where the valve was sat.

If that fails then its a new EGR valve I'm afraid!

Now for the other code, and I'm afraid that unless you have a proper scanner which gives live data then all you can really do is check the wiring for the crank sensor and then if that checks out ok then fit another sensor and see if that clears the code.
