Check timing, see if belt may have slipped out of timing, and need pressure tester to test pressure where the fuel goes into the fuel filter. check for vaccuum leaks.

How do I line up my cas sensor on my ca18det properly? And if it's out by much would that cause my car to splutter when driving?

Crank angle sensor =CAS DTC code 11 .
Cam angle sensor = CAS s work best. for sure.
i think this engine it is both !
there is no distributor it has 4 COPs coil over plug
and 1 ignitor module l , that nissan calls the power transistor pack. or PTU, the CAS on this car is really 2 sensors in one.
1 for cam angle and TDC (its a bit sloppy but back then no OBD2 rule to kill this idea)
they call it the crank sensor but is connect to the cam.

what car, what year, ? what country?

and sputter yes.
why not post exact year and car body mode.
or do like we all do
and log in and read the CAS timing , on your car. or buy the FSM.

here is the lest of cars using this engine.
The 1.8 L CA18DET was the last version of the CA engine to be released. It produces 167 hp (124 kW) and 166 lb·ft (228 Nm). It received a brand new DOHC aluminum head with 16 valves. The turbocharger was also upgraded to a Garrett T25 (.48 A/R) unit for increased flow capacity, and as such, was fitted with an intercooler to help prevent the onset of pre-ignition and/or detonation. Fuel was delivered via Multiport Fuel Injection. Bore is 83 mm (3.3 in), and stroke is 83.6 mm (3.29 in). An electronically controlled fuel injection system was used with 370cc injectors.
It was used in the following vehicles:
we run a 200sx in South America. Custom Turbo. ECU and all.

Our engine CAS sensor, has slots see them?
see it.

This engine has no timing freeze DLC (check-conn)like most engine.
hot normal idle speed, set it to FACTORY spec. 15deg. BTDC
do not guess. the ECU hates that. it assumes it is correct
and if not, will mess up big time. Set it to spec. and LEAVE IT.

if you dont have an FSM or a book showiing how to set timing
ask for one, buy one, or google for it.

if a turbo, and you guess, 4 cracked pistons is your future.
here is the fRee FSM
see page EC22 for spark timing.

down load the zip extract it the PDF is the shop manual.

did you run the ECU diagnostics, yet?, RTM.?
for IS the Check engine lamp glowing running?

toy and nissan have the best FSM , of all.
very BIG on diagnosis, unlike USA cars.
the ECU has switch see that?
and if a crank or cam sensor misfires, it will tell you it did.
I'm sure.
the ECU has 5 modes of diagnosis. a very nice ECU.
page 186

Now the real TOPIC :

Misfire is 50 reasons or just 3, (micro, and macro viewed logically
1: bad engine , low compression on any cylinder or all (timing belt slip is all) 150 PSI is minimum. for me. RTM
2: bad /weak/timed wrong, spark. (cas set wrong) test spark on all cylinders. and set the timing, if found way off the cam belt slipped)
never doing a 60,000 mile tune? duh factor 1?
3: bad fueling. too rich turns spark plugs (new?) black. and misfires.
lean fueling causes, bogging and lost engine power.
flooding can be caused by may things, it is , ask how to find this easy.

misfire causes the engine to shake does it?

ever consider a new cam timing belt, or do you want to risk it snapping or slipping?
all Nissans are interference engine. if the belt slips BAM, kiss off a nice motor.

96 jeep laredo stopped running gages quit and won't start even after replacing crank shaft sensor but it turns over like it wants to start

Crank sensor wont have any effect on starting, Cam position sensor would. Also check all your fuses.

Check engine light came on, computer scan indicated the cam shaft sensor was bad, changed the cam shaft sensor 3 times and the engine is still studdering and trying to stall. now the computer scan is...

cam sensor it also linked to the crank sensor usually if the cam sensor fails around the same time the crank can become un synced with the replacement. or the new sensor is not the correct one, ie sensor from a 1998 model will sometimes work on a 2005 model if it has the same ecu fitted in the 2005 not the hole ecu but the chip. on the cam sensor there is say in some cases 3 poles positive feed negative and then signal. on all the poles there is a resistance between poles that the ecu reeds. it reads the voltage being used and the signal its receiving if one of these is wrong but it detects one of the readings being right it will think the other sensor is wrong. and thats a mis match. the resistance changes over time.

ok, any obd code means the sensor concerned is not detected by the ecu, or is way out of range of the normal signal the ecu expects. I would therefor check the electrical path between the sensor and the ecu terminals, it may be just a chafed cable or wire.

No start 1992 300zx

Did you try rotating the CAS input shaft? Remember that the cams spin at half the speed of the crank, so a full spin of the CAS is actually 720 degrees. It could be that the CAS is 360 degrees out of phase and causing the car not to run properly. Unbolt it and remove it carefully. Rotate the input shaft (the part that mates with the cam) 360 degrees and put it back on, and see if that helps.

Also, just making sure, when you double-checked the cam timing marks, you did verify that in addition to the four cam sprockets being aligned properly, the crank timing mark is also aligned correctly, right?

Won't start

If there is someone near you with a Z, see if you can swap your cam angle sensor with theirs as a troubleshoot. The CAS is the round metal sensor on the front of the engine, driver's side, coming through the timing belt cover. It has one electrical connector coming into it. It is possible that the CAS is going bad, and if so it could cause the problem.

Also, the one recall for the 90-96 300ZX was the PTU, power transistor unit. It's the small black box on the passenger side timing cover, with a 6-7 wire harness coming in one side, and out the other. The early ones were known to overheat and fail, and the car would start intermittently or not at all. Your car likely has the updated version of it, but it can still fail. It would be worth trying to swap that as well, to see if that fixes the issue. If either of them do, you can buy that part from either new or used, and install it.

A note with the CAS - it's keyed to go on in one position only, but since the cams rotate at half the frequency of the crank, if you install it and the car starts, then peters out and dies, then you have it 360 degrees out of phase. Remove it, spin the shaft one full revolution, and reinstall it, and it should run.
