Question about 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

Can't push clutch pedal with key 'on'; key 'off' the pedal moves.

Hi,
I have a 1997 Jetta. Earlier today I drove through a rathe deep (approx. 18" deep) puddle.
Since then, I cannot push the clutch pedal down when the key is 'on'...but, when the key is 'off' I can push the clutch pedal to the floor!
Any thoughts?
THanks
Ssuwei

My clutch pedal suddenly stuck to the floor but wont engage anymore. The cable seemed fine

As far as I can remember, the Jetta has a ball & socket linkage on top of the gearbox. This linkage eventually wear out & the ball will pop out of the socket thus giving you no clutch pedal.
Lift the bonnet & have a look on the right hand side of the engine, you should be able to see what I mean. Push the ball back into the socket & you'll get your clutch pedal back. Chances are the clutch will probably go again unless you replace the worn parts but they're a cheap enough fix.
Hope this helps, Stephen.

I'm having problems with my 97 jetta gls 2.0. It had been driving trouble free with all gears accesible. After parking the car for 15 minutes and restarting it, I had a hell of a time shifting into any...

its possible your clutch cable got stretched out. if you are lucky, your car came with an adjustable cable stock, and the slack can be picked up, it not, the cables arent too expensive, and with a little work, you could install it yourself. but its not the most fun job.

have your friend sit in the car and push the clutch pedal, and measure how far the little arm connected to the tranny (that will move up and down when the clutch pedal is pushed and let out). it should move almost an inch at least.(generally) some cars if the clutch is worn enough dont require it to move quite as far.

I have a 2001 Jetta VR6. The clutch has very little play

so it engages at the end of the push or just when your foot is about to leave the pedal if it is all the way to the end when your foot is down to the floor this could mean that you have a leak in your slave cylinder or the clutch is just about to the end of its life. repair would be replacement.

My 1997 jetta 2.0 clutch stuck to floor while driving and now it wont take any gears

It is probably the clutch slave cylender, leaking fluid, add brake fluid and bleed the system and check for leaks then replace whatever is leaking, sometimes it leaks onto the floor of the car under the pedal.

I have a 1998 vw jetta tdi 5spd, it is getting hard to shift have to hold clutch to floor and still is rough to shift. Can it be adjusted or is there something I should be checking?

Jetta TDI manual from 1998 was always going with 5 gear speed and with hudraulic clutch. First off all make shure that you don't have any air in this hydraulic. After you are shure that pushing pedal is effective you may think about changing your clutch set. Depending what engine do you have 1Z,ALH or AFN there're diferent clucthes and prices
