Something you can do is to tap the 4/4 motor under drivers side on the back of transfer case with key on engine off. Have someone work the buttons as you gently tap the motor. Don't hit so hard as to dent it. Usually works.

put it back into 2 wheel drive, then reverse 10 or 15 feet, this should unlock the hubs.

Not knowing what type of 4wd engagement sytem you have, this is a guess. Maybe vacuum operated, look for a cracked or disconnected hose.

Or do you have manual locking hubs, that have to be turned manually?

Do the same in reverse when you take out of 4X4

My 97 explorer has a vibration in the frontend like its in 4x drive but i can feel it engage and disengage

Does dash indicate whether it's in 2 wheel, 4 hi,or 4 low?It sounds like it might be in 4 wheel low. With the car running in Park, try turning dash knob from 2 wheel to 4 wheel low and then back to 2 wheel..now depress the brake pedal. Instructions to to do this are usually on the driver's side sun visor.

4 Wheel drive does not engage on my 2002 Ford Explorer (6 cyl). Nothing happens when I push either the 4 High button or the 4 Low button. Any suggestions on what it could be? Worked fine last winter!

Could be the actuator motor on the transfer could be stuck or bad connection. Check to see if your gett power to the plug on the transfer case.

The 4wheel drive light is flashing on the dash.

the light is flashing to let u know a fault has occurred in the transfer case electronic control system, most likely the transfer case engagement motor

07 Ford Traction Control

2 wheel drive refers to the rear wheels.
The traction control feature applies the brakes to the wheels that are spinning due to lack of traction so that they can slow down and get a grip or traction, if its in 2 wheel drive the system will pulse the brakes and you will hear and feel the system engage usually a buzzing vibration and an indicator light will come on the dash to tell you its engaged

Help... My four wheel drive High or Low will not engage on my 1995 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition. This is engaged "on the fly". The light comes on indicating they are engaged but they it is not.

Try at full stop in neutral switching to 4 wheel auto ,give it a few seconds and if you don,t here it engage try putting it into reverse and then back into neutral and then into drive. If still dosen,t work tranny switch is likely sticking . service or repair.
