Lights and electronics inside the car turn on but the engine will not start. When I turn the key all the way , I hear a click coming from right side of car. I figured it might be the starter , but do not know where it is located in order to try to tap it with a hammer.. I heard sometimes that works. It has happened in the past and started after hours of trying to start it. So I'm wondering if the starter maybe finally bit the dust.

Does it chug chug chug for a while before it start or is it dead silent. Could be anything from a bad starter solenoid, weak battery to a clogged fuel filter. Need some more detail to help troubleshoot more.
There might be a vacuum line off somewhere, or forgot to be reconnected.
Also have the idle/air control valve checked, ( It's mounted on the throttle plate), the pintal inside might be stuck or inoperative.
check the ignition coil, if the coil fails car will not start!! it provides the maximum voltage for the ignition system. but be sure starter solenoid is ok. have a great day!! if this is a 1.8 then get in touch with dealership it may be on the recall list. give vin number! (the 1.6 and 2.0 this recall has no effect on you). the recall is for 99 thru 2000.
Check the air filter hose. My '99 Protege was idling rough and would sometimes shut off. The air filter hose was cracked half way around. I replaced it (easy just loosen two hose clamps and pull out the sensor) and the car is running fine.
It sounds like the car's security system is going off. Is there a key fob to lock/unlock doors and turn on alarm? If there is, connect battery, and immediately press alarm/unlock button to turn alarm off. I have a truck with an aftermarket alarm system installed by the previous owner, my battery died, and when I hooked up a new one the alarm went off, and it took a while before I hit the key fob button, but it stopped it. Let me know if this works for u.
