You NEED to go back to that shop and tell them to make it right-or call the state attorney generals office if they wont. They should never have told you to leave with a idiot light on after doing the work on your car!

My temp gauge isnt working and now my radiator cap came off in pieces. HELP!!!

You must have noticed that the engine was overheating. So check on the temperature sensor-thermister fitted on the engine jacket. If this is faulty replace or else the guage must be deffective.
Check for availability before you think of replacing.

My temperature gauge warning light is coming on periodically...oil level is fine. What should the temperature be at? Is it possibly a sensor problem?

The temperature guage measures the coolant temperature, not the oil temperature -- the normal range is indicated on the guage.

Check your coolant.

2003 Audi A4 Cabriolet ...cooling fans come on at start up

Yes this car should have a temperature sending unit that tells the fans to kick on. If it has two fans one of them is for you Air-condiontion, and it will turn on whenever the ac is being ran. One other possibility is if you bought the audi used the owner before you may have hard wired the fan to run whenever the car ignition is turned on. The only reason someone would do that is if they were to lazy to fix it properly.

You're talking about the coolant temperature right? If so, it's likely to be a coolant temp sensor. They're known to go bad on the A4, and they're only around $20-25 from www.ecstuning.com. If you replace it and the problem isn't fixed, no harm done - sooner or later that sensor WILL go bad. The result is that most likely your thermostat got stuck open and will need to be replaced.

Temperature guage

Right behind the grill around the rad. support on the passenger side (usually) there is a sensor called an ambient temperature sensor. That gives your outside temp. on your rearview mirror.
