Question about 1998 Nissan Maxima

2 Answers

My maxima doesn't always start.

Two years ago we replaced the battery, last summer the alternator was replaced and the end of November we replaced the starter. The car has approximately 120,000 miles and has always been well maintained. Recently we started have problems starting the car, sometimes it will take 3 or 4 times to start. Do you have any ideas what may be causing this?

the engine cranks but it doesn't start...the terminals/wires are clean on the was tuned up at 65,000 miles. We checked the plugs and they were white carbon coated...How often do you suggest a fuel filter?

Certainly a fuel filter would be a good idea, and as far as when it should be changed, I tend to go a little overboard with that I guess, because I have to get fuel at different places most times, which leaves me open for some dirty fuel at times. Plus I figure if pump has to work harder because of a partially clogged filter, then that will shorten the life of the pump. (the old spend a little now, to avoid the big bills as long as possible.) Here's one thing to try though. When starting it, turn key to ON only, not start, then off, then back to On, then off. Do that 2 or 3 times, then try to start it and see what happens. If it starts right up good, then that's an indication that the pump is having trouble getting the fuel up there at the right pressure for starting, either because of clogged filter, or weak pump, or both. You got 10 or 11 years out of that pump if it's still original, so it may be time, but I'd try filter first, and if that doesn't cure it, a simple fuel pressure test can be done to confirm that pump is getting weak. If you can get a ballpark price from someone in the area on testing your fuel pressure, and it isn't too rediculous, get it tested before & after filter to see if pressure comes up at all. Let us know how you make out.

You didn't state when the last tune up was?
I would have your fuel injected system serviced( clean injectors, check all vacuum hoses for cracks or leaks.Make sure battery connections are CLEANED and cables are not FRAYED, while you are at it make sure connections to starter are good and tight

Year-old battery dead. Jump started fine, but security light stayed on solid while driving. Shut car off & battery dead again.

Sounds like there's a problem in the charging system. It could be as simple as a loose fanbelt, or as major as a bad alternator. I have a very similar car, 2004 Infiniti I35, same engine/alternator, and my alternator went bad in November. Replacement is a pain, the book calls for removal of the AC compressor, though my mechanic pulled the radiator instead.

Engine hesitation

When is the last time the engine had a tune up with new spark plugs and an inspection of the ignition coils? Ignition coils were a pretty common issue with the V6 engine around that model year.

My 1996 Nissan Maxima's Alternator

Just because they're new doesn't mean that they work. I would find an auto parts store that does free electrical system checks before spending a dime elsewhere. I've gone through 4 batteries in 3 years because of bad products. And have most recently had to replace a brand new alternator because it, too, was defective.

I have a 1996 Nissan Maxima. The altenator and battery have been replaced less than a year ago. It still will not start with out a jump in the cold weather. .

Have an auto electrician CHECK ur HARGiNG system! Either ur battery got problem or the alternator! Alternator should have 13 to 14 volts output while running! Taah!

Car will not start loud clicking noise persists

mware nailed the first thing to check but if the battery checks out OK, the next step would be to remove the battery terminals (always negative first) and clean the cable end and the battery's terminals. If this still doesn't help, you will have to trace the two cables to their other ends (one, the positive, will go to the starter itself) and thorougly clean those . Having a battery terminal tool (cheap, auto parts store) and a standard wire brush.
If you've done all that, the starter solenoid (which may be integral to the starter) is the next suspect.
The starter is the last step in the chain. If you need to replace it, I have had good luck with 'refurbished' starters and alternators, just make sure they are warranted.

1997 Maxima has had 4 alternators in 4 years!

Hey! I have a 97 Maxima SE and it runs great too! I have been through 4 alternators in 12 years....3 in the first 5 and finally one for the last 7. Make sure you have a new- Nissan part specific alternator. And, make sure your battery is not weak nor small for your car size. Hope this helps!

Your charging system is not working properly. Most likely the alternator is going bad. If so your battery will die soon because it not being charged by alternator. Check belt first then check charging system if fine get back to me and I will be glad to provide more assistance if needed. If not replace alternator., problem solved. Good Luck
