Steering is hard to turn ?

You most likely have one of two things going on here, the steering gear is defective or the power steering pump is defective (I assume the fluid is full). If the steering gear is the problem it may only be hard to turn in one direction, if the PS pump is the problem then it is always hard to turn no matter which way the car is turned. In the future please include the make, model, year and engine type of the vehicle so I can give you an answer that is directly related to your vehicle..

Something wrong with Power Steering

1. Check that the serpentine belt is still intact and still in position over all the pulleys on the engine including the power steering pump.

2. Check the power steering fluid level. If very low or empty you obviously have a significant power steering fluid leak which could be from a ruptured flexible hose, a leaky hose connection, a leak from the power steering pump itself or leaks from the fluid seals in the steering rack. If the PS pump has been run with very low fluid it will have been pumping air and will be damaged.

3. If the PS pump itself has failed you will obviously lose PS assistance and a bad pump would need to be replaced.

4. Since you have not checked anything on the car no one here can tell you the likely source of your particular PS failure.

5. The steering wheel should still turn but if the car is not moving it will be extremely heavy and difficult to move.without PS assistance so don't attempt to drive it in its present condition.

How can you tell if it is the power steering pump or rack at fault for hard steering at low revs

Without a high pressure gauge cant test however it sounds like pump is warn rack will either leak or bind internally

04 durango Steering problem. Turns easy going right. turn hard going left. turning left feels like no power steering. anyone have an idea on what the problem is. Already flushed & put new fluid in...

at this point I would suggest that there is a problem with the directional valves in the box or hose condition as the pressure for the right is the same as for the left
it is not getting that pressure through the valve to assist with the turn
have an accredited steering specialist shop check it out

WHY CHEVY UPLANDER 2007 STERRING IS HARD TO TURN LEFT AND RIGHT

How hard, if it's as if you have lost power steering. Check to see if the power steering belt is still there or slipping, power steering fluid is low or empty. (Is cap leaking or leak in hose)
if it still has has power assist and has just gotten harder is it all the time or just low idol, need a better description of what is happening , I hope this helps

Tight steering not power assisted

No power steering? How did that happen? The answer to your question is yes it can be loosened just get power steering. : ) seriously though, That is what steering feels like without the power assist. Only thing I can say is if your moving it will make it a little easier than if your sitting still.

Power sterring is diffulcult, barely can turn sterring wheel.

Check the power steering fluid level.
If the fluid level is low, you obviously have a leak somewhere and it should be repaired. If the level is up, watch the power steering pump while the engine is running; is the pulley turning freely?
Power steering systems are hydraulic devices. The pump provides the pressure and the steering gear or rack and pinion assembly (depending on the vehicle type) applies pressure in the direction that you are turning the wheel to assist with the steering. When the hydraulics fail or when the internal components fail, your strength is the only thing turning the steering.
But start with the fluid.

How do you fix the power steering of a 2006 chevy malibu, when drive the steering wheel locks up and its very hard to turn.

a few possibilities.
Low power steering fluid. check for correct amount on pump filler measureing guage.

Loose power steering belt. check to see if the belt slips over the power steering pulley while trying to turn the steering wheel. may need an assistant.

last, but most expensive. Rack and pinion steering bar is defective and needs replacing.

Car hard to turn to right. happened all of a sudden. Any suggestions?

You have a rack and pinion steering system with a hydraulic power assist. If your belt on the power steering pump is in good condition and properly adjusted, and your power steering fluid is at the right level, the problem is most likely with the rack and pinion unit, since you have no power assist in only one direction.
