Car stalls when you let off the gas when warm or idling

I have a 1990 pontiac 6000 LE 3.1 litre engine. The car runs fine when its cold but when its warm it will stall under idle or when driving and you let off the gas pedal. While the accelerator is pressed it works fine and does not hesitae to accelerate one bit. I have replaced the fuel fileter and even bypassed it replaced the sending unit as I found a leak in the old one. I am getting fuel pressure. I'm wondering if this is a TPS problem. I have not received any engine codes as of yet.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Thank you. I cant change the idle screw because its preset and have no access to it. I have placed a peice if cardboard between the plate and screw and that seems to keep it from stalling.

Sorry I have not been back to let you know how it went. I pulled off the IAC and cleaned it as well as the intake manifold with a good quality cleaner. I also took readings off the IAC. The readings were fine. After the cleaning the IAC and intake manifold ( both was extremely filthy) the problem seems to have subsided. I also checked the movement of the IAC it was fine as well.

    Thanks for the great help.

I am having very hard time with my car, 2 months back I did following services
    1) Throttle body cleaning
    2) Fuel injections cleaning
After that I did not see any improvement (stalling on and off twice in a month), 2 weeks ago dealer did IAC cleaning and refixed, now getting worst and worst, stalling every day 1 to 2 times……before cleaning car was stalled only at stops now car was stalling when going down(roughly 10 to 20 miles/hour speed) and I was not able to apply break or stop my car (that time my break was stuck(pedal was upper high position and did not go down when I hit break) so I stopped my car using gear Drive to Park) , just I spoke with deal now he is saying replace IAC . I am not sure I have explained properly or not…but I am getting frustration

Sounds like your IAC (idle air control valve) located on the throttle body towards the front of the engine held in by 2 torx screws. the iac controls the idle if the car when your not on the gas. i will post the steps to clean the iac and the passages that the iac goes into.

1. disconnect the iac connector
2. remove the iac
3 clean the iac pintle valve and check for wear
4. clean the passages that the pintle valve sits in (usually carbon build-up in there, you may need to remove the air intake tube and air filter box to get to the passages in the throttlebody)
5. if the iac looks ok and the passages are cleaned re-install and put everything back
6. start car and see if it idles like normal when warmed up. you may need to give it a few tries for the iac to re-learn its proper position so give it a few warmup cycles
7. if it still stalls check for proper operation of the iac via ohming out the connectors (if you look it up on google you will find the specs at which the iac is supposed to operate)
8. if the iac is working properly, check for vacuum leaks on the intake manifold and vacuum lines.
9. if no vacuum leaks are present and the iac id working properly after cleaning have a shop check the ecm (engine control module) for a bad circuit board, i've seen that haoppen as well

hope this helps!

yea, the 3.1 in that car is not supposed to have an adjustable idle screw because the air fuel mixture is computer controlled. i forgot to mention in my post that if the iac fails to be within spec, replace it. also forgive my spelling, i'm tired, lol

Possibly the engine idle speed needs turning in a little to advance engine revs

Dirty air filter, dirty throttle body...try 2 bottles of gas line fuel injector cleaner...has your car been parked for awhile? Heet gas additive will work on any low gas tank sludge that you may have. Hope this helps.

Ignition system sounds probable on vhicle when everything gets warmed up. High pitched hum could be bad tire or worse bearing.

You need to replace the TCC solenoid under the side cover pan of the transmission. You can also unplug the wires that go to the transmission in the front. After that it will not go into overdrive but it will stay running at stop lights untill you have it repaired.

Sounds like you are loosing fuel pressure intermittently. Is there any damage to the fuel lines? Maybe the fuel pump is on its way out (loosing prime.) If you find this helpful, please rate, thank you.

4 cyl Engine starts and idles ok...give it throttle and it dies

I need to get a clear mental picture of what exactly is happening.

With this said, you stated that the car "runs fine" until warmed up.

Q: When you start the car when cold it idles fine?
Q: If you allow the car to idle until "fully" warmed does the car stall?
Q: As the car begins to warm up, Does the RPM fluctuate abnormally?
Q: Does the car Only stall when you press on the gas pedal or does it stall just sitting and idling in addition to pressing the gas pedal?
Q: If you can drive it while cold does the car stall during acceleration when warm or only at Stop Signs / Lights?
Q: If you wait 20min or so, can you start the car again?
Q: How many miles are on the car?

1990 Ford Probe 2.2 automatic stalls in forward, reverse OK

Sounds like a bad IAC (idle air control valve/sensor) that controls your idle when going from throttle to idle. If bad your idle will act crazy and can cause stalls easily. Pretty sure that's it.
