Heater does not work all the time

The heat for the car comes on when the car first warms up, but not at a high heat. After 10-15 minutes of driving, air turns cold and heater no longer works

The thermostat has been changed and coolant level is good. Is there a way to check the heater coil to see if it clogged or not circulating?

I know this is a old posting but I had a similar problem with my Jimmy. I unplugged both hoses connected to the heater core and got my air compressor out and flushed it with air, do it both ways (inner/outer) . Just try to put some sort of rag in front of the heater core so the coolant does not get onto you. it fixed my problem by doing this, might work for you.

Sounds like you do not have enough water in the system, or you have a faulty thermostat

Sounds like air in the cooling system. Try taking radiator cap off and letting the vehicle run with heater on high. As bubbles come out add coolant. This may take 20 minutes to a half hour.

Long time before heater blows warm air

That seems pretty normal, the heater works by blowing excess heat from the engine coolant. So the coolant has to be warmed completely for the heat to work, you can get a heater that plugs into your cigarette lighter that will heat the vehicle instantly.

Heater problems

Could be one of several things. Your car has automatic climate control that takes air temp and coolant temp into consideration in controlling the heater components.
The heater blower will not come on until the heater warms up. So the engine thermostat could be faulty and the engine is taking a longer time to warm up.
The electronic controller adjusts blower speed. And the blower motor could be going bad.
You may have to get a shop to take a look at it - someone with the books and tools to test the system.

Sound like you need to check the coolant level first, when the heater goes cold when it should be hot is a good indication your low on coolant which means you have a leak somewhere in that system, get it looked at real soon, you don't want to overheat the engine and blow a head gasket.

First thing in the (cold) mornings heater wont work. water gauge flux's up and down weird . then about 20 mins into driving its warms up

Your engine coolant is what your heater gets the heat from. You need to start your car and let it warm up for awhile before any heat will come. This is how most cars heaters work. Yours sounds like it is working fine; most cars take a little while to warm up.

Hope this helps!

No Heat in 99 Taurus

Just finished fixing my daughters 1999 taurus heat. It would blow warm only when running down the road. At idle it blew cold. I started with replacing thermostat, and water pump because they are the easier fix. Still did not help. Then I replaced the heater core. A daunting job but not that hard to move the dash slighly out of the way to replace. There is a good write up at tarusclub.com. After that, heat was better but at idle, it would still blow cool sometimes. Researched and found answer. Park car on the steepest hill you can find with front of car up. Start car and take off reservoir cap. Let car warm up and keep rpms about 1500. After a while the fluid will come running out of the car and all over the place but it will bring air bubbles with it. Reduce rpm, add more fluid and repeat about 3 times. It will make a mess but after that, the heater works perfectly. We get heat long before the temp gage indicates any and it never blows cold unless you lower the temp.

Delayed or intermittent heat

after checking the heater core hoses they were both hot I went in to look at the blend door and noticed it wasn't moving on hot or cold so I simply disconnected the lincage and moved to hot and its working ok. but its not completely repaired
