Question about 1999 Ford Explorer

1999 Ford Explorer XLT - Code P1131

I cleaned the original MAF sensor 4 times and every time it would return to normal for a day or two and then run rough again. I think it was because I disconnected the battery. I replaced the MAF sensor with a rebuilt one...same symptoms. What's the next step - oxygen sensor? Which one?

The recommended repair for both the P0171 and P0174 codes is to clean the MAF sensor. Ensure you use the proper cleaning solution, as there are many that will damage the sensor. Buy a cleaner that is made specifically for MAF sensors. The P0420 code will probably clear up if the MAF sensor clears the other two codes.

P1151 code

When you have both codes at the same time, it indicates that both bank 1 & 2 O2 sensors are reporting lean condition. If only one code appeared it is usually a bad sensor, but with both codes, it is probable that it really is running way to lean. This is usually caused by a vacuum leak. Make sure you intake hose from MAF sensor (air filter box) to intake is secured and has no leaks, then move on to looking for, vacuum hoses leaking, intake gaskets leaking etc...

PO171 and P1131 point to lean codes on bank PO174 and P1151 point to lean code on bank PO305 is missfire on cyl 5

the lean codes is probably a vacuum leak or maybe a MAF sensor is bad or dirty

missfire is dependant on engine if a V10 it may be a coil actually pretty likely on the modulars not uncommon thats for sure
sorry forgot to add that its says missfire on #5 cant remember if that one is the first on the left or last on the left facing the engine vacummn leak could be those dang auto hubs got it stuck in the mud and they did not engage I need to buy some new ones took them apart to clean them out this summer

Have a van w/ code P0171 and pending P1131. Idea is MAf

Hi

P0171 suggests th van is running to lean on bank 1 is the cylinder bank on the RIGHT (passenger side) the plug may be defective or coil damage, no spark.

Is this a gas version or Derv / diesel ? I am assuming it's gas.

DTC P1131 indicates the system is correcting RICH for an overly LEAN condition. In english this means the car's computer is telling the fuel pump to use more fuel (running RICH) because the engine has a low air-fuel mixture (LEAN). The car is out of tune or the airflow sensor, (O2) Heated Oxygen Sensor are worn or are getting an incorrect reading.

So quite rightly it could well be the MAF sensor, and I would look there first. also, try cleaning it with carb cleaner before replacing it, and also look for any air leaks in pipes as again this could cause this.

Regards

Dan

P0100 OBD-II Trouble Code

Technical Description

Mass Air Flow (MAF) Circuit Malfunction

Basically this means that there's a problem with the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or circuit.

You will likely not notice any serious driving problems, but there may be symptoms like a general decrease in power or sluggishness.
Causes

A code P0100 may mean one or more of the following:

* The MAF may be disconnected, or a wiring connection may be bad.
* The MAF sensor may be faulty.

Possible Solutions

Use an OBD II Reader (or go tou your local parts store and they will for free) and reset the code and see if it comes back.
Then start with the cheapest, easiest repair procedures:

* Check the Mass Air Flow Sensor wiring/harness is connected properly and that there are no broken / frayed wires.
* Unplug and reconnect the MAF wiring harness a few times to clear the contacts.
* Check the voltage of the MAF sensor (refer to a repair manual for vehicle specific information).
* Replace the MAF sensor.

  • Stuck EGR valve
  • Leaking diaphragm or EVR
