Question about 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

Check engine light is on and the temperature gauge stop working at the same time. could the problem be the thermostat or is it a fuse? my cooling fans are running differently after the problem occured, they stay running after i turn the car off, the fans never did that before those problems occured, i just had the surge tank replaced and the radiator flushed with all new coolant about two weeks before this problem started. the coolant level has not changed at all since i got it back from the dealership even after this problem so i really don't think its over heating. i just hope the thermostat isn't stuck closed cause i live in arizona. thanks, aaron

First, make sure that the temp sensor is plugged in and working. If not change it. If problem persists, check fan relay and sensor. It is doubtful that the problem is the thermostat because if open the fans would never come on (running too cold) and if stuck closed you wouldn't have to wonder if it was overheating... (would be blowing antifreeze out everywhere)

The check engine light came on the other day and the temperature gauge and air conditioner stopped working at the same time?? Any clue?

You need to check the thermostat, sometimes that piece is electronic but it depends the car, you may need to replace it.

My temperature gauge don't move and my check engine light does not come on

Bulb is possibly out behind the instrument cluster for the check engine light. As far as the temperature guage not working it sounds like your temperature sending unit is not working if it doesn't move at all. If your thermostat is stuck open it would come up some. If not your temperature sending unit is bad.

Which fuse is for temperature gauge on dashboard

  • The temperature gauge is not on a fuse of its own, it would work with all the instruments, ie fuel gauge, warning lights etc. If the temp gauge does not work and the fuel gauge does,, look for the problem elsewhere such as the sender unit on the engine. A quick check is to remove the wire from the sensor unit on the engine and short it out to ground. If the gauge picks up, replace the sensor unit.
  • Otherwise, check the wire itself for breaks, or bad connections.

Temperature gauge not working

Hi there,
My name is Steve. I can tell you that the barometric pressure sensor can, in no way, effect the temperature gauge operation. The gauge gets a signal from the engine computer which, in turn, gets a reading from the coolant temperature sensor. Your first step should be to have the check engine light diagnosed properly...starting with checking for codes. You likely have a code(s) relating to engine temperature or the temperature sensor circuit. Most common problems are erratic sensor operation and corrosion or oil contamination in the coolant temperature sensor connector. You will be time and money ahead by having a professional diagnose the problem correctly before deciding to buy any parts.

Check engine light comes on and then the temperature gauge goes up to hot

Mine did it too.... The problem is the Engine Power Relay.

The Engine Power Relay is in the relay box in the engine compartment. Aftermarket relay is cheap, but the original Ssangyong part will last many years longer.

Hope this helps.

My check engine light is on, and today my temperature gauge stopped working and we have replaced the engine coolant sensor and the connector and temperature gauge still not working. PLEASE HELP

Could be the thermostat. I know nothing about cars but I noticed my 2000 Grand Prix temp gauge was not going to the normal level. My wife drives this car so I didn't notice it for a month or so. Eventually the Engine light came on. Took it to Autozone and the code came back as P0180... (1) low coolant (2) bad thermostat (3) enginge fuel temp sensor. They used a code reader that was about the size of an Ipod nano.

Coolant was okay, so took it to my mechanic. His netbook sized computer showed it was the Thermostat. He reset the codes and the temp guage went back to normal. Was short on $40 for the fix at the time, so I parked the car and promised to bring it back in 3 days. Went out and checked the car a day later at 25 degrees outside without starting the car... gauge still sitting at the normal level. No question it's the thermostat. That car will not be driven again until T.stat is fixed in 2 days.

Go to your local parts store and have them pull your codes then re-post with your findings or codes so we can help you find the problem. They will pull them most of the time for free.
