'99 Forester with a knocking noise at idle and acceleration

I just purchased a 1999 Forester, and when I start up the car, I hear a knocking noise coming from the engine. I can also hear at when accelerating. It seems to go away at higher RPM's, or else it's just not audible at higher RPM's. Any ideas/suggestions?? Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the info, prior to purchasing the car I did all the normal checks for a blown head gasket because I know 2.5L Subaru motors are famous for them and I could not see any signs at all for a blown head gasket.

Sounds like you have a headgasket blown, a head, or your rocker arms or lifters whatever you prefer to call them are running dry. might be time for oil change and coolant flush. If ther is no overheating or coolant smell than get your injectors checked. You might just have a broken seal that emits louder sound from the pulsating injectors. Good Luck!

you will have to do a proper Pressure test! It requires some skill and common sense. Fuel pressure and psi. There is a wet and dry test. It involves taking out each individual spark plug and testing the cylinders. If the meter falls on test you have a cracked head or gasket. Sometimes you cant even notice it. It possibly could of had started recently within few months and depending on severity, it could start affecting other mechanical parts. Hope it goes well for you.

did you buy it privately or a dealer w/ a warrantee? If you have a warantee, use it.If not start by changing the oil& see if that gives you any results.use the proper oil for Subaru, not a Quick Lube.
