Question about 1998 Ford Ranger SuperCab

My 1997 F150 4X4 won't move!

I can crank it and put it into gear and I can feel it going into gear, but the wheels will not move. Then when I try to put it back into park, it will start to grind. I have to kill it to put it back into park. It acts as if it is out of transmission fluid, but it has plenty. I don't think I have any vacuum problems, but I just can't figure out why it won't engage the wheels.

Do you know how I would go about getting my transfer case into gear? Or where I need to begin? When I turn my dial on the dash (2H, 4H, 4L), I can hear the motor on the transfer case working. But, like I said, it won't engage the wheels.

It sounds like your transfer case is in neutral. Or it may have failed inside.

I the motor is working you'll probably need to get it repaired some where because the problem is probably inside the transfer case. It will need to be removed and inspected.

1997 conversion van was towed now it wont go in reverse

When you tow a vehicle -- a flat bed hauler -- is your best bet

Next would be -- to use a wheel lift to raise the rear wheels or
remove the drive shaft, so the trans does not have any internal
parts moving

Hard to say IF something was ruined or reverse was about to fail

When reverse goes on a rear drive GM trans, your pretty much going to be taking it apart & rebuilding it,as reverse is the first parts into the case & the last out on disassembly

Usually a sign the tumblers in the lock cylinder have worn out or jammed.
You may have to get the lock cylinder drilled out and replaced.

My steering wheel locks up when I put it in park, and when I try to restart it, it won't crank. The key won't turn. What do I need to do?

grab the steering wheel and turn it left or to the right and sometimes you might have to put a little effort in it but one way the steering wheel will move about 1-2" and as you are moving it with one hand take the other hand and turn the key and it should turn a lot easier.this is a common thing and if you can try to have the wheels straight and try not to use the steering wheel to get in or out of the vehicle and the wheel should not lock and make it so hard on have to use both hands at the same time one moving the wheel and the other one turning the key but start moving the wheel in the in direction that it moves the most then turn the key.
