No fire from the ignition module to the distributor

Ok, i am not getting any spark from my ignition module to the distributor. i had it tested and it is good also i had changed out the crank sensor as well. is there something i am missing?

Why my 94 Astro van will not fire


this generation of gm vehicles is easy to troubleshoot. the engine needs 3 things to run: compression, fuel, and spark. since you mention fire, i assume you have no spark.

disconnect any random spark plug wire and connect the end to a hei spark tester. crank engine and observe for spark. if you have no spark, disconnect the center terminal of the distributor cap and use the hei tester in the same manner. spark means cap and rotor bad or bad plug wireset. no spark means make more checks.

check for battery voltage and good ground on distributor. check for open or shorted ignition module or ignition coil windings. if power and ground is present and ignition coil tests ok, check for ignition pulses at coil primary. if you have no ignition pulses feeding the coil, change the distributor.

with that generation of vehicle, the ignition system will operate without help from the computer. don't even troubleshoot the guts of the distributor, if you change the cap, rotor, and anything else, it will be the same price as a remanufactured distributor, and might not fix the problem. if you troubleshoot a low volrage related issue (no pulses, shorted or open circuit, unstable timing, etc), change the whole thing.

The spark problem is first because the computer uses the same signals to control injection Ford used two types of ignition systems #1 closed bowl this has the control module mounted on a heat sink next to the drivers hood hinge and 6 wires coming out of distributor or thick film where the module is mounted on distributor on both systems need to test the pick up coil with a logic probe for cycling voltage ok replace module if not ok replace pick-up coil.

Hello, Bridget.. The problem is getting voltage/current to battery side of the coil
Need to check the coil. Easy way here. remove all the wires the are attached to coil but leave the coil grounded to the car body. Remove the coil wire from the distributor and lay it down next to some metal material. Take a piece of wire (16ga) or larger and attach one end to the positive side of the battery (+). Now, take the other end of the wire and touch the battery side of the coil---off/on--off/on--off/on. Now look at the end of the coil wire that up against the body/metal and see if it is sparking (dark blue and about one inch long), if it is sparking then the coil is OK.

You know it not working with the distributor connected. So, that leaves two things
the pickup sensor in the distributor or the ignition module. My educated guess will be the ignition module. It is located on the driver side fender, and it will look a 5X5 inch square with large plug that is plug into the module and held there with a screw.

Now, to check the distributor pick up coil. Check with the auto store and ask them what would be the resistance across the coil, or what is the resistance across the two wire from the distributor. If it check out OK, then ignition module is bad. I hope this help you out, GB....stewbison

It will turn over but wont start


It is most likely a fuel problem or a spark problem. Check the fuel using starter fluid. If you can get it to fire with the starter fluid then your problem is with the spark.
Start by removing a boot from a spark plug. Hold it about 1/4 inch from a good ground and have a friend turn it over. If you get good spark then it could be your timing that is off.
If you don't get spark remove the boot from the distributor and do the same thing. If you don't get spark then you could have problems with the coil, the distributor, or the ignition control module. The ignition control module can usually be removed and tested at a parts dealer. A test light can be used to test the coil.

1989 chevy 2500. started it up in driveway it died wouldnt start. changed ignition module drove it to town died wouldnt start again. got a diognostic tester which read throttle positioning sensor changed...


I WOULD CHECK IGNITION FUSE TO SEE IF POWER GOING TO COILS AND IGNITION MODULE. REPLACE DISTRIBUTOR CAP AND ROTOR.HAVE IGNITION TIMING CHECK.DISTRIBUTOR CAN SLOWLY WORK A LOOSE JUST A LITTLE TO THROW OFF IGNITION TIMING SO PLUGS WONT GET NO SPARK.

Check and see if u have spark to the plugs, if you don't replace the TFI ignition module on the distributor and the pickup inside the distributor, the dist must be removed to do this coil pickup replacement.

89 f150 wont fire


i suspect a fuel pump malfunction. i would check there first. make sure the fuel **** fuse is good and well. check the lines for blockages. after you run the fuel pump/fuse/line test, go to the distributor/coil and test the spark value. i would also check wires as well. your problem should be in one of these specific areas.
