Question about 1985 Ford F150

1 Answer

Oil Leak Valve Cover

I have a recently purchased 1985 Ford F150 standard V8 that has leak on or around the passenger side valve cover area that drips down and hits the exhaust part that comes right out of the engine and causes smoke. I checked the plug (freeze??) and it looked to be intact but I am not 100% I was looking at the right part. Being that I have limited skills with disassembling engines how hard would it be to replace the valve covers and/or how would one go about it? 2nd Could someone provide a picture of a freeze plug as it sits in a 1985 Ford F150?

Thank you. Looking at the engine it looks as if I might have to remove some items from the top of the engine in order to get to some of the bolts. Is there a special tool or wrench I should have to not have to remove stuff? You make it sound simple, is there any sealant that I use to secure the gasket . . . like similar to plumbers putty or something? What is pinching a gasket?

Its a fuel injected engine and the fuel injected thing (plenum??) sits on top on the engine. I dont thing I will be able to get the valve covers off without taking it off. Is taking it off hard?

Ok, so I spent the better part of today installing the new valve cover gaskets and a new "plenum" gasket. The one leak has turned into more then one leak. I just used the gasket and the valve cover with no sealer or other such thing. Should I use a product to seal the gasket to the valve cover before I rebolt it to the engine? Also the valve covers have room for the tabs from the gaskets to be placed in but only on one side. the other side has no tabs thereby allowing the gasket to move about while trying to bolt it on. I feel that were I to use a product to "stick" the gasket to the valve cover I would have a better chance of getting a leak free seal but I defer to the more knowledgeable. Also how tight does one tighten the bolts? I know they have torque specs but I was told to just tighten till it gets tight and then go another quarter turn. I hope you can help.

If it is leaking around the valve cover then that is the problem. Just remove the bolts from the valve cover in a cross pattern (ex. back right - front left and go back and foward and work till you make it to the middle. Go purcahse a valve gasket for both right and left and replace them. Tighten in the same cross pattern and be careful no to pinch the gasket.

do not use sealant or gasket maker. The bolts will eather be deep socket or just regular.

With that year it shouldnt be that bad. And remeber to pay attention to where you remove things. If you feel that you may for get then you can write it in a note book. But to replace valve gasket in that year should be a breeze.

Also if you have to take spark plug wires loose to get the valve cover off just label the wire to the right plug.

No it consists of about 4 bolts, about 1 wireing harnes, and sometime vacuum lines. Just becarefull not to rip the gasket that is on the throttle body. And do not bump it around hard eather.

Various seals & gaskets will inevitable leak. Gen, they do not affect engine operation & will not damage engine. Simply keep ample oil supply in engine. Then the solution to oil leak problem is installation of an ''ENGINE DIAPER" device that catches, absorbs, and keep oil leak off ground surfaces. See www.oildiaper.com for info & purchase of an "ENGINE DIAPER".

Excessive Oil leak on 1985 Chrysler Laser 2.2L (non-turbo). My 17 year old son purchased the car with little history. Noticed a small oil leak on driveway. Replaced the valve cover gasket and leak...

A plugged pcv system will cause excessive oil leaks. But it sounds like you have a massive leak. If the passenger side is leaking behind the timing cover there may be up to four seals that may leak.single cam motor will have one cam seal dual will have two cam seals. Crank seal and possible oil pump seal. Would recommend pressure washing motor, go to local parts store and get some engine dye. Then support car and let engine get warm. And try to pinpoint leak.

Have oil leak not heavy, but it leaks any answer were it could be coming from..

Valve Covers, Head Gaskets, Oil Pan Seal and a number of other spots. You'll need to clean the motor with Gunk Engine cleaner and then look for the largest build ups of oil and crud to get a better idea where it is.

2000 ford focus oil leak drip off rear top of oil pan. oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket?

Sounds like the valve cover gasket, clean off all the oil on the engine with a pressure washer or a steam cleaner and then drive it and recheck for the leak, that way you can pin it down for sure.

2003 ford f 150 5.4 v8 leaking oil from top of motor on left rear side drips on starter cannot see where its coming from

clean it off & inspect for a valve cover gasket leak, a head gasket is possible but unlikely. Use a flashlight & an adjustable inspection mirror (don't buy the cheap small one) to observe for the leak. if that fails you, then go to the local parts store & buy some Brake Cleaner, Florescent Oil Leak detector additive, and a lamp kit for UV dye diagnosis. use the Brake cleaner on all suspect/dirty surfaces, place additive in the engine oil, start engine turn on light & place glass'es on face, look for leak, ID & repair,, recheck work

Smell like burnt rubber in engine compartment on passengers side. 05 plate 2 litre Focus Diesel. Engine runs seemingly happily, no odd noises, no visible warning lights or messages.

I expect that you have an oil leak that is dripping/running on to the exhaust. The burnt oil will smells a bit like rubber. Check for oil leaks that are higher up on the engine. (Valve Cover gasket for example).
