Question about 1989 Subaru Gl Wagon

1 Answer

Ignition switch? my 1989 subaru has problems starting. sometimes it starts right up but other times won't for a couple days. when i turn the key all the dash lights come on, the radio, and the heat, and there is a click that comes from the engine but it won't fully turn over. battery and fuses are fine, could this be my ignition switch?

My mechanic told me that my alternator, starter,

and battery were good. He checked for a short somewhere thinking that that would be draining my battery (when someone jumps my car it starts right up) but nothing was found.

Nope, it's the starter or more specifically, the copper contacts under the removable 3-screw plate. Make sure that your battery connections are clean and tight - I've been bitten by that one too many times.

i suspect either the ignition switch is worn out or the starter.
test the starter first then the ignition switch. both are fairly easy to replace and not too costly. if you are a diy person then do a screw driver starter test. This will determine if the starter works and usually how well. I buy the starter rebuild kits online for $35. The ignition switch is also around the same price and easier to change than the starter. The ignition switch is accessed by removing the lower steering column cover then the two screws for the upper cover. Then unplug the ignition switch then remove the holding screw. sometimes the wiring is taped up carefully remove the tape. when installing the new switch make sure the key is out so that the new switch will align correctly

HMMMM thinking aloud here ,_-_--hmmm right have you run a hot wire from + on battery to the small terminal on the starter if so and it cranks then its either starter relay or the ignition switch ,but if starter turns ok with the hot wire then before you go any further try the spare key if still no joy with spare key then its electrical fault if it starts with teh spare key then your other key has lost its chip or been close to a mobile phone or TV screen and blanked the magnetic bar code .

Camaro trouble

Place the shifter in neutral and try to start. If the problem goes away you have a park/neutral safty switch at fault. If the problem remains, I would consider replacing the ignition switch located on the lower steering column, not the key tumbler but the ignition switch. If you have a test light and know how to use one we can go through the test procedure.
Try the shifter test first and let me know.

1998 subaru clicks when starting

The starter solenoid is clicking so your ignition switch is okay. You've changed the starter? Apparently the solenoid is separate from the starter. Check that the wire from the solenoid to the starter is intact and make sure the ends are nice and shiny. Then it's probably the solenoid itself. Some cars have a fused wire, notably older Fords where the wire itself is a fuse. Your "Snubaru" dealer can tell you.
