Remove all the screws you can see from plastic cover.Remove two bolts holding inside grab handle. Pop loose the plastic paneling (held in place by plastic tabs) just enough to put arm through below glass at center. Pull up on metal rod ( make sure it is not locked). Once you've got the door open then you can finish taking off entire plastic paneling to get to nut holding handle assembly in place. Lubricate actual latch and make sure nothing is stuck or not working properly. You can buy a whole new latch assembly at jeeppartsstore.com for like 38.00 bucks. Just replaced ours this morning too.

Tail Gate of a 1996 jeep Grand Cherokee will not open would like to see diagrham of inside tail gate

That's a chronic problem with those. As the vehicle travels down the road, vacuum is created that draws salt and dirt into the tailgate and the latch mechanism rusts up solid. The only good way in there is to cut a hole just to the drivers side of center, about five inches above the floor in the inside cover You will see a rod that goes between the lock and latch. Either the rod has fallen off or the latch is binding (or both). Spray the latch with a good solvent and pull on the rod and the latch should open.
Usually, if you work it back and forth by hand, you can free it up. If the rod has fallen off, put it back on and use JB Weld putty, to secure it in it's holder. Inside covers are easy to find cheap at most local scrapyards, or, you can make a cover for the hole you made.

You have to remove the handle assembly and the latches. Working through the hole where the handle is, work the throught the edge of the tailgate and fasten to the latch assembly, then install the latch assembly. Once both latch assemblies are connected, reintall the handle assembly.

1999 GMC Sierra truck tailgate release latches are broken and gate won't open?

If you remove the ring around the handle you will get a better view of the two rods that connect the handle to the outter latches. The ring just snaps in.I think a flat head screw driver from the bottom works the best.Once you have access to the rods you can push the inward twords each other to pop the gate.If the are broken out twords the tail lights then a thin flat head in the gap betwen the tail lights and tail gate should be able to push the spring loaded latches in to pop the gate, but you may need to borrow a extra set of hands.Well hope this helps.

I have a similar problem, my tailgate stopped working with the outside handle and the remote but can be opened manually from the inside. I don't have an alarm so there is no problem with that but did you get a solution for the tailgate problem that I could try?

Tailgate latch is broken, can't open tailgate. Window is open.

unfortunatly there is no way to open the tail gate(without breaking the inside cover )but once you do that, your hand can fit inside the gate and all you have to do is feel around for the gate latch, pull it,then the gate will open. hope this helps(i have a 1996 blazer i had to do the same thing)!!

Tailgate will not open

Hello and thank you for using FixYa!

To get the tailgate open, you will need to get into the back of your truck and remove the inside panel of the tail gate to access the latchs. Once you get in there, you can check operation and make the repairs you need to get your tail gate working again.

Thanks Jay!
