Tranny drives good for a bit them it shifts hard.

I ll be driving at normal speed then 60kmh then all of a sudden it shifts hard and wont go back into proper gears while driving. Stays in 3rd gear but if I stop and shut off the car it shifts properly for a bit and then it does the same thing again. I replace the trany fluid every month cuz it gets black fast and smell rotten. On your transmission there is a transmission speed sensor (vehicle speed sensor). These do go bad sometimes. What happens is you are going along all happy at 60 mph but the info being transmitted by the sensor is incorrect and BAM you're not so happy anymore. This also puts a lot of additional wear and tear on the transmission. For this vehicle at Autozone you can buy the sensor I believe for around $40 and it is not that hard to change or maybe expect to pay maybe $40-60 to change (guesstimate)...hope this helps you.

I have a 1997 Ford F-150 Lariat, and when pulling a trailer it makes a chattering noise when the gas pedal is pressed down to pick up speed. When going up a hill it will not go passed 40 mph and starts to...

If tranny is manual shift you may have a bearing and or bad gear. Try changing tranny fluid. Check manual for correct fluid may use tranny fluid rather than gear oil. I recommend using Royal Purple fluid or gear oil. This very expensive but will slicken up the shifting and extend bearing and gear life.

I just replaced my tranny. It was working great

About 3 months ago, during my 25-mile commute to the ambulance base where I volunteer, my transmission started acting up. After a few minutes of driving normally, it started to upshift very hard. Each upshift was accompanied by a noticeable "Bang!" and it felt like the car was hitting a pot hole.

I immediately stopped and checked the tranny fluid at a service station, but the fluid level was fine and it didn't have any burnt smell. The car has 76K miles on it and the transmission fluid was changed at 50K per the maintenance schedule. I had no choice but to continue on to the base, driving very gently.

I made a stop about 5 minutes before arriving, to pick up dry cleaning. I was in the cleaners for about 8 minutes, and when I came out the hard shifting had completely disappeared. The car drove smoothly for the next 3 months.

Now, this problem seems to recur any time I drive the car even remotely hard. We're not talking about full-throttle accelerations here, since my everyday driving stays below 2500 RPM to save on gas. But if I'm in a hurry and start driving a touch harder - crossing over 3500 RPM - then the tranny will start shifting hard within minutes. Let it sit for 10 minutes with the engine off, and the problem is gone again

Try a tranny service change a place that changes the filter the pan gasket and fluid not some of these quick places that just drain a couple quarts out of the tranny lines and thats it that wont help but a complete tranny service should help.

The tranny fluid is full but brown and smells like gas...any idea

Transmission is worn and previous owner has added transmission fluid additives like Lucas transmission oil to try to make it last longer. The fluid is burn and needs to be changed, best thing to do is to have the transmission fluid and filter changed and add some additives to the fluid and try not to drive it to hard.
It shift's hard when your driving at normal speeds because the fluid is thicker then it should and the transmission line pressure is higher due to the thicker fluid. At WOT the transmission slips so it seams smoother and that's why the fluid is burnt.
Good luck and hope this helps. Do not do a trany flush, the transmission is already worn out, but the dirty fluid will make it worst too.

VSS (vehicle speed sensor) Tells the PCM (computer) the speed of the vehicle so the PCM can make the proper information to the TCM (transmission control module) to shift.
YOU are goin gto need a scan tool NOt a code reader to monitor the VSS to see what it is putting out for speed when the car is moving But I believe you need a VSS but do not not Go out and buy one until you have had it tested , and can positively confrim it is bad first. Please rate this a fixya if you find this advice helpful, Thanks Randy
