Question about 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

The radio, air conditioning, and lights are going crazy

I have a 1998 cavalier.Everytime I accelerate my lights get brighter, the a/c goes on full blast, the radio works better, and the heating/cooling gauge needle goes to the middle When I am not accelerating the lights dim or flicker uncontrollably, the radio gets fuzzy for any station, and the heating/cooling gauge needle goes all the way down to the left as if its not working. What is wrong with my car. The battery is fairly new, the alternator is fairly new, but I heard that the ground wire battery cable maybe disconnected. Is that all it could be if not what are the other possiblities.

Just take your car to advanced auto or autozone , or some other car parts chain and they will check your charging system for free. They will tell you what the problem is. I hope this helps. Don't forget to rate my answer, thanks.

Sounds like the voltage regulator has failed.
Check voltage at the battery with the engine at idle and again with the engine at cruise speed. Voltage should be around 13 volts at idle and 14.5 volts at cruise speed.

This is driving me crazy

you may have made your constant power hooked into the same wire they are on so you may need to run straight to the battery for constant power. if you've already done this then id make sure you didn't unplug anything.

First, check actual battery voltage (should be 12v or better with engine off. Then check that all connections are clean and properly secured at both ends of the battery cables. If battery is a bit old, have it load tested. Once you get past that, put a volt meter across the battery terminals and crank engine (or try). If voltage drops below 9.5v change the starter. Once you get started, finish by checking alt output...should be between 12.9 and no higher than 14 at idle, should hold around 13v or better with no drop off with all lights, heater radio etc on. Maske sure alt drive belt is in good condition.

Your dashboard circuit is probably burnt out. The same thing happened to me, it's like a $20 part but is about $60 with installation, check with a dealer though.
