Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

1 Answer

No reverse I heard a loud clank when I turned right going down a hill and when I parked at work I had no reverse. It also feels like it is in 4wd all the time now. It makes a high pitched whine when in reverse and goes nowhere. It feels like I am screwed.

Put it in reverse and it idles down like it went into gear but goes nowhere. put it in drive,3rd,2nd all forward gears good to go. last drive it felt like it stuck in 2nd, and showed 3500rpm at 60-65mph and never shifted to 3rd. Fluid is good, not low or showing any issues. 170,000miles on truck.

Turbo 400 transmission is making a loud metal to metal noise when shifting from drive to reverse or park to reverse.

could be internal piston housing failure for the bands
pull the pan and see what metal is in the pan
there is an aluminium housing that breaks away from the transmission body proper and is replaceable

the brakes have not been set properly. may be something stopping the pistons going back in. failing that the disc's are bent, can happen when over braking down hills etc. you would need the alinement checking.

97 ford ranger 4wd 4.0. Been to a trans man and 3 garages and no one can figure this out. When shifting park to reverse I have a big thump in te rear end and the body of my truck scrunches down. Won't...

Does it do the same behavior when in 4WD LOW or 4WD High? If so, it's the transfer case or possible the front or rear differential.

Clanking noise when in park, louder with ac turned on

Pull the engine accessory drive belt off and check the pulley bearing and the nose of the water pump and AC compressor for play, this may be the AC compressor pulley bearing or the water pump pulley bearing

Rolls excessively forward when downhill and put in reverse

No, it is not normal. Most people use only one foot when driving, no matter the conditions. However, in this situation I think you may be able to recover this issue by keeping your left foot on the brake, put the car in gear, LIGHTLY apply the gas then slowly remove your foot from the brake. However, I would strongly recommend that you take your vehicle to a shop that can service your transmission and see what they say. It could be just a simple adjustment.

Cracking or breaking sound when turning mainly when parking

I doubt it. I heard the same noise from my old Accord when the CV boot was going out. If you heard breaking from the drive shaft I believe the next thing you'd see is it rolling down the street. If the drive shaft were making that sound you would not be able to continue driving.
