My 2005 Ford F150 4WD has started making a grinding noise when it is in 2WD. The grinding noise goes away when it is switched to 4WD, but comes back when it is switched back. It sounds like it is coming from the left front, but I have not been able to find anything wrong. Any ideas?

It sounds like you have different size tires on the front than on the back causing the t-case to bind up. If not, your having an engagement/disengagement issue in the t-case or the shift actuator for the t-case

may be the backing plate is hitting. or it may be the wheel bearing is bad. check by making turns and see if the noise goes away or starts grinding like a washing machine. IF grinding is worse replace wheel bearring.
sound like the hubs may be bad and not completly disengaging or engaging, this will give you a loud clucking grinding type noise,i would remove the hubs and see if they are working good, or put selector into 2wd and jack the front of the truck off the ground and spin the wheel to see if the axle moves, this is so common, a think this year has the vaccum control hub too, the hubs are common, you will need to make sure the vaccum lines are connected and clear of dirt, this sound you speak of i know it sounds like it grinding metal, theres also a module that goes bad but you will need to start with the hubs.
