All motors will use a small amount of oil over a period of time. It is used by boiling off in the sump from blow by around trhe rings and ring gaps, smoke vapour through the manifold system and general leaks around the engine or sump gasket. It is necessary to lubricate the rings as they are moving. However having said that consumption in excess of 1 liter pre 5000 miles would bear investigation as it will point to engine wear or leaking oil seals

SOURCE: OIL PRESSUE LOW

At some point, your engine is registering low oil pressure and warning you the oil pressure is insufficient to lubricate the engine properly.

How does the engine know this? What causes it? Excellent questions. The engine 'knows' this because there is one or more sensors that read the oil pressure all the time. The sensors report to the computer which reports to you. They could be faulty. On the other hand, there could be times when oil pressure IS low. Your oil pump may be mal-functioning. Normally, I would expect the oil pump to either do its job properly or NOT do it properly but not act intermittently. It may warrant being checked by a professional. Another reason for this condition could be the oil itself, though you report you just had it changed. Presumably, whom ever did the change put in the proper oil grade, service and weight, recommended by GM.

Another thought, is this warning seen by you immediately after you start the car? If yes, it is normal for oil to take a second or two to build the proper pressure, particularly in cold weather. Where I am at, it is cold. Oil doesn't like to move when it is cold (like me) so it takes a bit of time to get up pressure (like me).

If this continues, you may want to have this problem looked at by a professional, as I said.

Your engine might be burning oil, first of all get cylinder compression test done to find out which cylinder is weak, if all cylinders are same or close in value then you might have broblem with the valve guides for leak down.

Is it bad to drive my 2006 Malibu with blue smoke from tailpipe

That could be a sign of a blown head gasket check and make sure the car is not over heating if so that may be the case.

What causes a 1991 F-150 5.0 to blow white some an idle roughy like it is out of time

Most likely cause, bad head gasket or worst case a warped or cracked head. Blowing white smoke is usually a sign of coolant getting into the combustion chamber. Blue smoke would be oil. Check your coolant level see if it's gone down and check for bubbles in the radiator which would be a sign of a leak to one of the cylinders. And most of all don't drive it anymore. Coolant leaking isn't a death sentence yet, but constant coolant leaking into a cylinder will cause corrosion and oil contamination as well and you could end up with engine oil that looks like chocolate milk.

Vehicle smoking

If the oil level is a bit high, a car can smoke. Make sure the oil level is below the "MAX" line.

Engine vacuum leak and oil level come down and car smoking and engine noise

You can find the vacuum leak easily. With engine running, spray some starting fluid near where you suspect the leak to be. If the engine speeds up from sucking the starting fluid in at the leak, you found the leak. Fix it. As for the burning oil and engine noisy, you will need to rebuild or replace the engine because it's worn out.

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

The cylinder head is located on the center of the engine. Yes it can be a worn out head gasket or piston rings. If the piston rings are worn out the oil is burnt that's why it emits white smoke. You will need to replace the head gasket and piston rings.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
