Have you tried backing up at least 10 feet .. If there is any driveline bind this would release it and allow the transfer case to "shift" ..

You can otherwise remove the shift motor off the back of the transfer case and manually shift it.

    Here is a diagram

The shift motor may need replacing ..

I know GM's have the same problem, I'll give you that soultion and if it works great, if not, sorry. Start your truck, step on the break, shift tranni into netural, and then try putting it back into 2 wheel. Simple solution but like I said, I don't know if it will work with fords or even if it's a more serious problem like linkage, acuator for your 4x4 system, or if push button, if it's the switch itself. Any of these could be the cause, but normally the simplest solution is the best.

My 2001 ford explorer sport i stuck in 4 wheel low. How can i fix this?

Put transmission in neutral with engine running push the button for high 4x4 several times. If that doesnt work, tap on 4x4 actuator while someone pushes the button for u. Its kinda like a starter.

01 f150 4x4 4whell drive will not engage lights on dash come on

I am going to assume that you have auto 4x4, and not manual shift base model.. it just sounds like the servo motor that shifts between 2x4 and 4x4, has gone bad

question:
does it still engage into low range, even though it is stuck in 2x4?

2004 Sport Trac stuck 4x4 low

Start the vehicle put the 4x4 switch to the position the light on the dash states it is in. then put it in nuetral, hold your foot on the brake switch the 4x4 switch back to 2wd wait a few seconds and the light on the dash should switch back to 2wd. and you should be back in 2wd
