Question about 1986 Volkswagen GTI
I replaced the water pump and had to replace the timing belt. The car ran before I replaced both, now I cannot get it to stay running. Marked the gears on the crank pulley. The car turns over and catches but will not stay running. I have to put the gas pedal to the floor or pump the gas to get it to catch. Never had to do this before. Do I have to re do the timing? If so how do I check to make sure the timing is right?
The gti is a 1.8L? Guessing it is you'll have to check all 3 sprockets at top dead center. With the timing belt upper cover removed the mark on the back of the cam sprocket should align with the upper surface of the cylinder head. At this point if the timing is correct the mark on the crank pulley and intermediate shaft should align. You can also check the inspection hole in the transmission as the mark of the flywheel should align with the arrow in the housing. I have a big feeling your timing of your intermidiate shaft is off. If you follow the cylinder 1 wire to the distributor cap then remove the cap the rotor on top dead center should be pretty much aligned pointing to part of the cap where wire 1 is. Sounds like bad timing. If it's off a little you can loosen the distributor bolt and turn the assembly adjusting the electric timing but this gets much more complex as you can over advance the engine and cause damage as well.
