Question about 2001 Chevrolet Blazer

1 Answer

Sometime it starts sometimes it don't

When I turn the key it's not sending power to the starter. I've replaced the Relay and it still doesn't work. Most of the time if I keep turning the key or just wait it will eventually start. It's not the battery or the starter.

No the security light isn't flashing

  • jnl41908 Feb 20, 2009

My battery is fine, but my car is having trouble starting, and it stalls on me on inclines, declines and after i've been idle for a while (<1 RPM).  I know the battery is fine because it has an 8 year warranty, I bought it in 2007, and I've had it checked.  (actually it was the first thing I checked after this started).  The battery light does come on when my car stalls, though, and it hasn't happened slow enough for me to see if the lights flicker or not before it stalls.  It seems like on cold mornings it has the most trouble starting.  And it has stalled on me on incline ramps to parking lots, etc.  My solution is to put it into park, turn it off, and turn it back on (these times I don't have trouble starting it).  What's going on?  Is it the alternator?  Starter? Accelerator?

I have a 92 sentra lights come on but when i turn key nothing happens. Starter good ,relay good, head lights don't dim when you turn key . Car won't turn over at all

If by lights, you mean the dash lights come on, then ignition switch must be getting power. If dash is not working with key on, check the 30 amp fuse link which powers the ignition switch.
If switch is good and starter is good, the start wire from switch goes to, if automatic, to inhibitor relay (the park/neutral function) and then to starter. There is also an inhibitor switch on the shifter or on the transaxle that turns on the inhibitor relay when key is on and shifter in park or neutral. The inhibitor switch is powered by a 10 amp fuse D.
If you have a manual transmission, the start wire from ignition switch goes to the clutch interlock relay and then to the starter. This relay is turned on by the clutch interlock switch on the clutch pedal.
You can check for power on either relay, the inhibitor relay or the clutch interlock relay, with a test light. Pull the relay out, have the key held in start position. Now both relays would have power showing on two terminals where the relay plugs in. If inhibitor relay only has power on one terminal or no power at all, either ignition switch is not sending power or fuse D is out or the inhibitor switch is not working right. If clutch interlock switch does not have power on two terminals either the ignition switch is not sending power or the clutch interlock switch is bad.
If the relay checks are good, check for power on the small wire to starter with key held in start. If you have power there, the starter solenoid must be out.

Atos ignition problems and screeching

If you hear a click under the hood from the starter the starter solenoid but starter is defective and you should rebuild it. If that is not the case I would replace the ignition starter switch, this is the electrical switch the key cylinder actuates to turn on the electrical system and engage the starter.

How about corroded battery cables (internal)

Fusible Link wiring corroded & open circuit, does
everything electrical work except the starting circuit?

Turn key & have power to starter solenoid ?
Neutral Switch !
Ignition Switch !

Tough to guess without wiring diagrams,
to see where to start testing

Can't fix what you don't know you have

2001 grand prix, 3100 engine. sometimes the car does not crank with the key turned, then it will. I have held the key in the start position a few seconds to get it to turn over. On other occasions it...

Yes! it is the starting point for your check. when the key is turrned it is IMPORTANT to see if the power comes to the solenoid. If there is +12 to the solenoid then the fault is in the starter motor, can be due to wearing of brush or commutator.
If there is no power from the switch then the key switch contacts are bad. Also check if there are any errors that are displayed to prevent the switch from clicking.

Won't run

There are several no cost things you can look at for starting the engine;

) Is an anti-thief system killing the system ?
) Try giving the solenoid on the starter a few sharp hits. Sometime the solenoid sticks. If this works you would still have to replace the starter. It will only work a few times.
) neutral safety switch - This switch on the transmission prevents starting in gear. Try PARK or NEUTRAL.
) starter relay - this is the relay to transfer power to the starter. When you turn the ignition it clicks on to transfer power to the starter. I think it may be located under the hood.
) fusible link - This is essentially a fuse that limits the maximum current to protect the circuit. Believe to be under the hood. They can get corroded or burn out. Your lights will work but the starter will not.

I believe it will be one of above but of course as suggested you can take it to a repair shop.

Starter doesn,t engage sometime when the key is first turned but you can turn it off and it will engage after a few times turning it off and on . other time it starts after turning the key off and then...

Does this seem to be getting worse (have to turn key on and off more than before to start?) Your starter is on the way out. Replace it before it won't start at all.countrycurt0
