Question about 1998 Oldsmobile LSS
(1) Why does the security light come on. Comes on when driving vehicle.
(2) Why, If you shut vehicle off when security light is on, car won't start. It appears to reset it self after a short period of time and then the car starts fine.
alot of cars show a crankposition sensor on a test if it was bad car would not run unless you have a problem with car stalling or running bad when it gets hot not a ignition module if car still runs good not a major problem one problem would be a bad 02 sensor does not mess with car alot gas milage loss mabe slight hesitaion look at sensors that dont mess with engine if not 02

does it start at all, or does it run for about 1 second and shut off? if the latter, then it's the passlock system, and he could have a defective key or security module. the keys have a predetermined resistance value which activates the passlock system to prevent hotwiring. If it is the passlock system, then sometimes you have to wait 15-20 mins for it to reset before starting the engine.

If the lights on the dash all come on but the engine wont turn over it could be a problem with the VAT security system. Your key has a little chip on it between the teeth and the handle. This is a common problem with GMs', often just replacing the key is necessary but sometimes the VAT module needs to be replaced.

Probably need to take the grille out to get to the latch.

Testimonial: "Thank you, I was hoping for a picture of the latch's location but I was considering this myself so it is nice to have a confirmation"
on the v6- 3.1 yes you do. here is how to change it yourself, first of all, release tension on the belt tensioner. remove belt from pulleys, place a floor jack under engine on motor mount side to take off. put a piece of wood on jack to protect engine. jackup to engine with very slight pressure to hold it while removing mount. take off mount, remove old belt, put new belt on. the tensioner can be moved with a 3/8 drive in tensioner hole. after belt is on replace mount. then lower jack down. thats it!!
