My 4x4 ford expedition rear differential makes a winding noise,can this be fixed or shuld i buy a used one.Thank's

Yes this can be fixed. Sounds like your spider gears have decided to cause you problems. If you can't do the repairs yourself take it to a good gear shop. They can replace the shims and or bearings. Do not attempt this if you know nothing about setting up gears. Don't waste your money by purchasing a used differential. Like I said a good gear shop can do this for you. Shouldn't cost to much.

My 99 Ford Expedition rear differential locks when I turn the steering wheel to the left or right, also as I am driving it makes a grinding noise and it locks as I am breaking and when I accelerate. Should...


This is bad, rear end locking up and grinding, i will bet the bearings are shot and so is the ring gear and pinion gear . the cost to rebuild this will be costly and you would need a tech to rebuild it . if the ring depth and pinion depth are not correct then noise will start and wear,

I thing the best bet is to locate a used rear end, and install it. it is not hard to install used differential .

When you remove the cover save tag that is on bolt to cover, you will need this when locating used rear end, also count teeth on ring gear and pinion then divide to get the ratio. there is a good website that will help you locate a used rear end in your area.

Front end 4x4 noise, whurling or winding noise . from low speed all the way up to high


without hearing the noise it is difficult to diagnose as there are many possibilities.
the most likely for a whurling or winding noise is the front differential (diff).
check the diff oil level as described in the manual and top up/change as needed.
if the noise continues it may be worth getting it checked by a mechanic as there are quite a few possibilities.

i have the same problem can't figured it out although when i turn the knob to AWD the light on dash just flashes. the 4x4 H and 4x4 L light on dash stays on.if u have found out anything please let me know or e mail me at bigd6923@yahoo.com Thanks Don

2006 ford expedition...4x4-front passenger wheel drive from differintial sloppy and loose from housing-flops around. Can this be eliminated for the time and run strictly off rear differential?


no it will breakj under stress crossing 4 lanes and a median then go through a windsheild killing that nice family of four and geting you charged wityh manslaughter so the short answer is NO

99 expedition trans feels like it engages but will not move.fluid level is ok


Check out these things: rear wheels locked up because of emergency brakes coming apart inside rear drum/rotor.

Rear axle broke

4x4 controls switched half on-half off.

Torque converter broke

All of these problems will not make much in the way of noise. You will need both rear wheels off ground and trans in neutral to turn the rear wheels. If they turn its likely the torque converter.

hello i will help u.there is an additive you can add to the differential to stop this problem.you can find it by going to a good auto parts store.But otherwise your noise is common.and not a major problem.

If u can find a used diff that they will guarantee by all means do so, the cost to overhaul is at least $1000, more if it need posi clutches, make sure u get the same gear ratio and type of rear-end, they are not all the same.

does the whinning noise decrease or go away when u decelarate? this is the key to a proper diagnosis. if it does, then your problem eather ring & pinion gears or related bearings (these are all in the center part of the diff.) if it does not change,the problem is in the wheel bearings, or rough tread on the tires. the former is expensive(4 or 5 hundred), the latter is not so bad(a hundred or so). u could try raising it up & supporting it under axel housing, have a friend run it up to about 40mph as u listen with a hose or stethescope to pinpoint the noise
