This problem is caused by the sending unit inside the fuel tank, very common problem.

Then you either have a blockage before the fuel rail ( unlikely ), a bad fuel pump or a problem in the electrical circuit for the fuel pump ( inertia switch, fuel pump relay, fuse, etc )

However, are you certain the vehicle has fuel in it? I just had a guy spend big money on a new fuel pump because the truck quit on his wife. The fuel gauge read inaccurately and she had actually run out of gas. 2 gallons of gas and the truck started right up again. Can you hear the fuel pump run?

Fuel gage showing half a tank but trip computer only registering 60 miles left

Its very simple. If the gauge is showing half full then fill the tank and see how much fuel it takes. If the amount you add is approximately 50 percent of the fuel tank capacity then you know the fuel gauge is accurate . In that case the computer is giving an inaccurate reading and should be ignored. All you need is an accurate fuel gauge - it does not matter a row of beans what the computer says if the fuel gauge is reading correctly.

Erratic/inaccurate fuel gauge readings

The fuel gauge pickup assembly is mounted on the outside of the fuel pump which is inside the gas tank.
It is a big job to service or change and it should only be undertaken by a person who understands the entire fuel system and electrical system. (Expensive as well)

My 2001 Pontiac Aztek's fuel gauge works until about 1/2 way through a full tank of gas and then starts reading erratically. Example: drove 400 km on tank (tank usually yeilds approx. 520 km) and it was...

it is one of two things the fuel gauge in the tank is bad or the gauge in the dash is bad...I would check with the dealer to see if they have seen that problem before...they maybe a recall for that problem...
