There is no way to answer the question about how easy it will be to fix until u have checked the engine trouble code(s) that turned the check engine light on, there are over 100 different faults that can turn on the light, some can be very easy to fix, even a defective gas cap can cause the light, but others are very labor intensive to track down, it is the labor that kills u on these problems, just to look at the problem is most likely $100-150, then u still have the repair, so $400-1000 is not unusual for a reapir bill, I know this because check engine lights was 90% of my work load at the dealer I worked at, no one else wanted to do it because of the amount of time and energy involved to repair many of the problem's that turned the light on.

The easy fix? OK--here it is---remove positive battery cable--step on brake for 10 seconds, reconnect cable.

If it resets, get a code reader to see what the malfunction is. Remember---Volvo's remind you of oil change intervals by displaying that wonderful light!

BTW--at 123000 miles I would suspect the oxygen sensor is in dire need of replacement. Replace with Bosch only!

Timing belt felll off on highway, will there be a lot of damage 2000 volvos-80

Volvo recommends for Volvo S80, changing the timing belt every 105,000 miles. Needless to say, they are pretty religious about this now.
The B20, B21, B23, and B230 engines are non-interference engines, meaning that the camshaft can be rotated independently of the crankshaft and no damage will result to the engine. That is, if the timing belt breaks, the valves will not hit the pistons; the engine will simply stop.
On the other hand, the B234 16-valve engines and any of the other Volvo multi valve engines are interference engines. Loss of the timing belt in these engines will result in severe or fatal engine damage.
Your car might be fitted with:
2.8L (VIN 90, 6th & 7th digit, B6284T eng, turbo)
2.9L (VIN 94, 6th & 7th digit, B6294S eng)

Can't find a test for the vehicle speed sensor.

The bad news is the only part that is connected to all of these is the ECM or computer.
