Question about 1988 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

1989 Wrangler Ignition Lock Chrome ring broke off.

I can still start the Jeep, but my keys keep breaking. Do I have to replace the whole ignition lock cylinder? Do I have to have a wheel puller. I don't really like working on cars, but this jeep is not really worth taking it to a repair shop, so I'd like it to be simple and something that I could do myself......

I need step by step instructions on how to replace a 92 jeep wrangler ignition lock cylinder. Someone broke into my jeep and broke the assembly. There are no tabs left. The key is able to turn it back to...

best advice is to cut the whole thing off and renew, yes you can remove the barrel, its not difficult but because of the damage it may not come out .when repaired always use a steering lock over and through the spokes in the steering wheel ,its the best deterrent their is, better than any boy racer sunday mechanic add on gismo that always ends up going wrong when the battery goes flat .Or awakes the neighbours when a cat takes a leak or chased by a dog

1989 jeep wrangler starts jumping and backfiring

Start with the basics...meaning check the spark plug wires and spark plugs. While under the hood, inspect all hoses for a vacuum leak(s). Then turn the ignition key on-off-on-off- on...leave in the on position and write down the number of flashes the check engine light indicates....2 flashes = #2....pause.....3 flashes = #3.
Let start from here. Are you able to perform engine repairs or diagnostics???

Jeep liberty 2002.....ignition key lock

Most commonly it is the key is worn out. If you have a spare key or your current one is not too badly worn, have a copy of it made and try it in the switch. You will have to have the copy key "coded" so it will disable the anti-theft system in order for the engine to start. If the new key doesn't fix your problem, you will have to replace the tumbler assembly.

Went to start my jeep, and the key just spun around. accesories are on, and i can't turn them off...? do i need a new ignition lock??

Absolutely! The only way to ensure your ignition switch will work properly again (even if you are able to get the key back to off and the accessories turn off) is to replace the switch. I hope you found this solution to solve your problem and wish you all the best. Take care!

The ignition switch is stuck in the off position and i mean stuck. The key goes in all the way with no problum but the switch will not turn keeping the stering wheel and gearshifter locked. so what i am...

I had the same problem and was told the pins inside the ignition start to lock up on older vehicles. This could also be caused by having a heavy key chain or many keys causing weight to hang from the ignition. I was informed the only way to fix it was to replace and rekey a new ignition which runs about $300-400. I can wiggle mine when this happens and usually get it to move. I'm going to ride mine out as long as possible.
