Question about 1994 Acura Legend

94 Acura Legend temp gauge goes up while driving.

Car has a new radiator about 1 year ago. Temp gauge goes all the up, then drops back to mid range. No steam from under the hood. No leaks, but can smell an odor outside the car.

Sound like u may have a blown headgasket or 2, have a cylinder leak down test performed , also have a block check performed... if u determine u have a blown head gasket or 2!!!, be sure to check the block for warpage and send the heads out to a machine shop to check for cracks and machined if still good.... may as well have them perform a valve job as well if u can afford it..

Have you checked your cooling fan to see if it is working propely? Let the car idle and get warm and listen for the fan to kick in (if they are electric) or just watch to see if the fan starts to spin faster if it is the old school type with a clutch. Have you replaced the thermostat? A bad one will let the temp rise since it opens too late and then the temp will drop off. But it won't due this only at a light and it will do it infrequently.

I would check the system for leaks and low coolant and then if nothing is found replace the thermostat.

Based on what you are saying and what you have done so far you have a cylinder head gasket leaking combustion gases into the cooling system, this type of leak causes a gas bubble to form around the thermostat and then it will not work properly. Also when this type of leak is the problem there will be no white smoke out the tailpipe or coolant in the oil, the gasket only leaks on the compression stroke.

My engine temp gauge rises when the car is idling and goes back down when i start to drive

1. Make sure your coolant is at the proper level in the overflow tanks as well as in the radiator.
2. Make sure the cooling fan is working properly (note as a quick check, turn on the A/C. It should come on with the A/C on regardless of engine temp). When the car is stationary your radiator relies on the electric fan to move air through it. When you are moving air passes through without the need of a fan.

The thermostat may be wearing out. A thermostat controls the engine temperature to keep it at a consistent temperature, The other fan will probably turn on if you turn on your Air Conditioner.

If it is excessive, your coolant may be going in the engine. Have the head gasket checked. Worst case could be a cracked head.

Overheating

It may actually be a coolant temp sensor problem - they do have issues sometimes. I'd replace that before anything else - they're generally inexpensive (in the $20 or less range). If, when you ask for a new one, they ask you which one you want, you need the one for the dash gauge. Some cars have one for the gauge and one for the car's ECU. Your problem is with the one that drives the gauge, so get that one.
