Trail blazer gear shift button

Could be the brake switch or the shift lock solenoid. You may be able to turn the key lock to the unlock position, move the shifter out of park, then start the engine in neutral.
The shifter and the shift lock solenoid would need to be inspected.

My 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont start sometimes, but if I put it in neutral then try to start it..It starts .. What is the problem with my baby.......

Test/Service/Replace

The circuit on newer cars with automatic transmissions has a neutral safety, or neutral start switch installed between the ignition switch and the starter. The ignition switch cannot operate the starter motor unless the transmission is in park or neutral.
Late model vehicles with manual transmissions have a starter/clutch interlock switch that requires the clutch to be depressed to the floor.
Neutral Safety Switch
Normal operations of a neutral safety switch provides a quick check for the adjustment of the gear selector linkage.
  • To do this, move the selector slowly until it clicks into the PARK position.
  • Turn the ignition key to the START position.
  • If the starter operates, the PARK position is correct.
  • After checking the PARK position, move the lever slowly toward the NEUTRAL position until the lever drops at the end of the NEUTRAL stop in the selector gate.
  • If the starter also operates at this point, the gearshift linkage is properly adjusted.
  • This quick test also tests the adjustment of the neutral safety switch.
  • If the engine does not start in either or both of these positions, the neutral safety switch or the gear selector linkage needs adjustment or repair.

CAUTION
Since you must work under the vehicle to adjust most shift linkages make sure you properly raise and support the vehicle before working under it. Also, wear safety glasses or goggles while working under the vehicle.
A voltmeter can be used to check the switch for voltage when the ignition key is turned to the START position with the shift lever in PARK or NEUTRAL. If there is no voltage, the switch should be adjusted or replaced.

For car not changing gears it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

For more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----

My automatic gear shift sticks after sitting in very cold weather. Car starts great, but won't shift until the car warms up for a while...

That happens all over the world and thats because of the cold weather that affect the gear shifter Solenoid that releases the shifter after you press the brake pedal and when its cold the the solenoid get stuck. you might wanna check it or changed if need be. Good luck

Have a hard get the gear shift to go into reverse

if it will not shift out of park when the brake is pushed then in will be the shift interlock, but if it is still hard to move after out of park then it will be a shift cable

Will not shift out of park until warm

There is a shift interlock solenoid under the center consule. Try putting the ignition key with the car off in between off and crank position. Then put the car in neutral start the vehicle and engage gear selector normally. however you would have to do this every time the car is turned off. if that works try unplugging the solenoid itself. you woill have to take the top off off the shifter assembly< (not hard though) the car will operate fine without solenoid hooked up but you WILL LOOSE the safety aspect of the way it was origanally designed hope this helps GOOD LUCK and GOD BLESS AMERICA

WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF PARK

I had the same problem (will not shift out of park) with my 03 Durango with column shifter, worked on it and found the issue to be a pin that comes out in the steering column to block the shifter when the truck is turned off in park. When you turn the truck back on the motion of the key switch is supposed to allow the pin to retract so you can shift. In cold weather mine acts up. It looks like the pin is retracted with a spring and there may be some grease in the system that hangs the pin up in cold weather. Cleaning the parts may be a fix but to get mine working I pulled the boot that surrounds the shifter lever out of place and then the pin can be seen. A push on the pin with the key on and it retracted so I could shift. I think I will just leave the boot out until it warms up and I can try some presserized oil free cleaner on the parts.

Car will start but gear shift is locked

follow instructions in manual for SHIFTLOCK RELEASE

Turn off car.
Engage Parking Break
Take ignition key and put into shift lock release slot (near gear shift)
Push down on key and at same time MOVE gear shift to neutral.
Remove key, start car as normal and disengage parking break...

good to go.... mechanic can replace/repair if this is an ongoing issue: $85 I read somewhere...but heard it's not hard to do yourself for $35 someone else wrote.

Goodluck
