Question about 1998 Volkswagen Beetle

1 Answer

2000 VW Beetle Hatch won't close tightly.

3 days ago, my 2000 VW Beetle worked just fine. Then the check engine light went on - I recently had it in for an oil change and tune up. That next day, I used the auto release on my key to pop the hatch. When I went to close it, the hatch wouldn't latch. The hook on the hatch won't engage. The only way to 'secure' the hatch is to use the key and manually partially lock the hatch - there is about a 1' gap however.
Are there fuses or something that could have gone bad to interrupt the hatch lock - might that be why the check engine light went on?

Try taking the battery out of your remote to see if it just still sending the signal????? You might have to clean your remote with contact cleaner. Also check the latch to make sure nothing is in the way of the latch????

Old new beetle VW harness has contact resistance problems(vibration of wires) and needs to be recrimped the long wires(vibration can be stopped by silicone rubber anchoring). Cold weather make battery voltages low and needs recharged with handbrake on(headlamps off) 10 minutes warming engine up the whole winter.

You got a lemon. Most likely one of the coils is giving out if your model has two or a connector may be loose somewhere. You'll have to get it checked out.

Likely your hatch light is what is setting off your alarm. Spray water around the hatch switch area with everything closed. Check for leaks.

Is your check engine light on? Check the throttle body or maybe the accelerator pedal is bad.

My 2000 VW Beetle idles really rough and loses

I had that problem for the longest time. I had to clean the Mass Air Flow Sensor. Very easy to get to. Go to any auto parts store and ask them for the MAFS Spray. If cleaning it doesn't work, you may need to replace the MAFS. Once again easy to replace. Make sure you put it back nice and tight.....

What do you mean "check the radiator"? Does the radiator not work or only work every other day? You could have a clog in the cooling system and it might be smart to get it flushed out.
