Sounds like the Engine mounts need to be checked, and/or it has intermittent firing on one or more cylinders. Could be the spark plugs and/or the Fuel injectors need to be cleaned. As the Engine somtimes shuts down, I would suspect the plugs or injectors.
The check engine light needs to be addressed. Yes it could be a sensor but you need to know. The light blinking means the problem is serious, such as a dead miss on one or more cylinders. The light being on means something is happening with the engine performance that could damage the catalytic converter. Get the computer scanned - most auto parts stores will do it for free in hopes of selling you some parts. Once you have the codes research them online or here.
you may have a fuel filter/pump problem which can cause this type of problem if it can supply enough fuel to run the motor, and can cause stalling problems and popping noise out the exhaust.you may have to have it put on a scan tool to check for a code that may not set the check engine light, and the car driven with the tool on it so they can take a snap shot of the problem when it happens so they can study the information to see if something is showing up.
Sounds like a fuel injector is clogged up or is not firing due to the computer not firing it. Check by putting a noid light on each injector and checking for pulse by viewing a blinking light from it. Also, one can check to see if a stethoscope can be used to listen for a clicking from the injector indicating it's at least pulsing that way.
Sounds like your 02 sensors are bad. This will cause speratic idle. Up down, up down. If it still fires a little after engine is shut off, then there is too much fuel in motor caused by faulty 02 sensors. This will also cause check engine light to turn on. The 02 sensors tell the computer how much gas to give to engine
