With a 12 volt test light and an assistant, check for a signal to (S) terminal on starter solenoid.If ok, check all connections at starter for clean and tight.If still no crank, replace starter. If no signal to (S) terminal, suspect ignition or neutral saftey switch.

First make sure the battery is fully charged. Then check for clean battery post connections. Then check all the main fuses located in the plastic box under the hood close to the battery on top of the inner fender. You should have all dash lights if everything check out to this point and it should turn over with the key.
Remove battery leave off for a few hours. good time to give a charge on mains charger, put the battery back on. now put key in ignition and turn to number 2 and leave it on number 2 for 10min or more the light should stay solid on the theft control. turn off ignition then turn back on slowly. the light should not come back on. if it does come back on. take the radio out and check the wires to the radio you can do this while the battery is off... there is a lot of wiring problems on this model so i have found.
those vehicles are common for starters did two today alone when it wont start try to tap it with a hammer it on the back side of the engine under the intake if it starts replace starter
I have a Montero and it won't start with the key in the engine compartment but it will only start using my key pad what should I do i did just get another battery the other day could that be the problem
Does it crank over normal and just won't start or does it seem to turn over slowly or not at all. If it doesn't crank over like normal, test your battery. Low voltage will do strange things.
battery failure ,it does happen,cleanbattery terminals pour boiling water over terminals if they are corroded loosen clamps by undoing nut wiggle clamps back and forthand and retighten if no lights then ,iwould suspect computor failure -------- youdoit.com
