SOURCE: cant get back door to stay closed
It sounds to me ( correct me if I'm wrong ) like the door latch on the side vertical edge of the door is in the LOCKED POSITION. In order to unlock it perform the following. First electrically with the LOCK button UNLOCK the locks. Now with one hand hold the OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE IN THE OPEN POSITION, while at the same time FLIPPING OPEN THE LATCH. All Done . Now you can close the door. Hope this helps

open the door and look at the 2 jaws that go around the strike. then pull the door handle as if you were opening it from the outside and manually retract the jaws back to the open position. this is a common thing that happens. after that it should be ok. lube it with wd40 afterwards.

My 2005 Equinox just had the same problem on the rear passanger door. My husband took a heat gun to the latch about 10 minutes ago, and now the door latches.

Open the car door and pull on the release latch that you use to open the car door from the inside to get out. At the same time use a screwdriver to push up the latch on the side of the door. Sometimes the seatbelt gets caught on the door when you close it causing the latch on the side to close prematurely.

Take something like a large screwdriver and put in the lock mechanism like the post on the door jamb would if the door was closed. This is a two person job. THen have someone pull the handle like they are opening the door and when they do that you slide the screwdriver inwards to catch the latch and pull it open. You are simulating opening the door. The latch should catch in the open position and stay that way. You can then use the door in the normal way. If the latch does not stay in the open position then you might need new hardware. THe dealer or a salvage yard would be the only place that you could get this. Installing it is another subject.
