Question about 1998 Chevrolet K1500

1 Answer

Taillights will not go off

My husband has a 1 ton 96 Silverado Dulie pickup, and was told to replace the switch commutateur interruptor. I picked one up for him today, and him and a buddy are going to do it, but not sure where to find it or how to hook it up.

Thank you so very much. My hubby is on his way home right now. I'm not sure if it's the tail lights or the brake lights. All I know is they don't go off. He is working in Brazil, IN and had to take it to a dealership there, and they ripped him off and found other problems to fix but could not fix the lights staying on all the time. They finally told him he needed a (switch commutateur interruptor). Told him how much it would cost and he called an Advance Auto Store here and got it about $200 cheaper. So, I bought one today. He needs to know if there is a diagram of something for them to go by or is it hard to do. Thanks for an answer....I told him, we have put so much money in that truck that I'm going to start calling it a "Golden Truck". (haha)

Well, my husband is home now, and I just asked him. He said They just stayed ON. They just wouldn't go OFF. Found out it was the Taillights. He's down there in a campground close to where he works for the IBEW, and he figured he wouldn't have any juice the next morning in the battery, but luckily his truck started up.

WE are completely in awe, because he came home, then we walked out the garage to go out to eat, and I said What happened to your lights. You said they wouldn't go OUT. They WERE OUT. He said a few choice words, and said I don't have any idea. I said Check to see if the bulbs are shot. He did and they were fine. We have no idea what happened. Because he had to go to a meeting as soon as he got in town before he came home and they lights stayed on, just like always. But when he came home, they went out. Go figure!! I said I'll take that part that cost over $200 BACK to Advance Auto,. He said, NO, you can't take something like that back. He said I'm going to go ahead and have my friend help me and we'll put it in, anyway. Just more gold on that Golden Truck! LOL

Even though the lights went OUT, since we already paid for that part, he's still going to install the (switch commutateur interruptor). Now, the problem is...Is it hard to install and where to start, and how to do it? Thanks for any help.

Are You Sure it IS the TAIL LIGHTS and Not the BRAKE LIGHTS? HAve Em Pull UP on Brake Pedal See if they go off If They DO its Just that the SWITCH Adjustment witch is SELF Explanatory After Looking at it Closer to the Pedal makes it turn ON Earlier Further Makes it turn on Later BUT>>if NOT then The Next Item Would be the HEADLIGHT SWITCH They have a BAD Track Record Around that Year for Failure.

You should be able to find one at your local auto repair store, or even a junk yard might have one you can get. I believe it's called a switch/commutateur Interruptor. Also you can try places like Ebay.com and Amazon.com

1996 Chev Silverado K3500 dually, no brake lights

Check at the light socket in the rear, where your lights don't work. You need a test light or a voltage meter, and check to see that you have a groun there, power for your parking light, and power to the brake light. You should have power for the parking lights seeing that it works, and a ground. Just verify that your power for the brakes is getting to the bulb, or not. Just a good place to start.
And you are correct that if the third brake light works (top) your brake light switch is fine.
