Question about 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup

Open Question

VW Sharan intermittent problem loses power and engine cuts out

The speed sensor (tachyometer sensor) has failed. How much does it cost to get a replacement part and how hard is it to fit yourself? Where about on the gearbox does it fit and how likely is it that the old one will be corroded by electrolysis between the copper sensor and the aluminium housing? Can you send me diagrams of where and how to fit it? My 1981 gas engine pick up rabbit truck has intermittent problem when running under load, loses power and cuts out. I have to wait until engine cools down to re-start it with difficulty. Rod

SOURCE: vw sharan

I have a Transporter 2.5 TDI that had similar problem. I found the small pipe that supplies boost pressure the the waste gate valve had worn through. This caused a over boost condition at revs over 2500 rpm and the computer reduced fuel to counteract the over boost. I would start looking in that area. You may find your solution there also.

Cheers, Dennis

SOURCE: Why does my 91 VW Jetta stall out and lose power while driving?

I had a similar problem and the mechanic diagnosed it as a problem with the ignition coil. So you might want to get that checked.

SOURCE: VW sharan auto gearbox will not engage in reverse.

Your reverse band is gone, any gearbox specialist can do this but cost about £500-£600, Good luck

SOURCE: towing a caravan with a diesel vw sharan auto

That is an excellent installation. I would also look into a transmission filter and fluid change with some higher end transmission fluid.

It is possible, in fact likely, that your ECU (main computer) is failing. Less likely, you may have a bad oxygen sensor or other bad sensor. Best first step is take the car to your local auto parts store and have them use an ODB reader to determine the error causing your Check Engine light to be on.

If a trouble code on a 2000 vw shows speed sensor and the test comes out good what is the problem

engine speed sensor could be faulty.engine speed sensor provides the ECM with a crankshaft position signal.the ECM uses the signal to determine a crankshaft reference point top dead center and calculate engine speed. engine speed sensor like the crankshaft position sensor.if sensor faulty fuel system wont work. a bad engine coolant temperature sensor will cause engine shut off when hot.

Check engine light on for sometime; Response to throttle sluggish

If your catalytic converter is "below efficiency" or otherwise clogged, you will lose power as you drive and the vehicle heats. The more you drive the vehicle, the worse the problem will become. The exhaust can't escape properly through the catalytic converter, therefore your engine won't run properly. Your issues are related, and if you replace your catalytic converter they should go away.
