How do i locate and change a water pump in a 1995 chevy caprice?

I was told, by a shop, that my car is overheating because I need a new water pump. This was after I paid $40 and was told that it was fixed. When I left the car was still overheating so I took it back. They told me that the only thing they could come up with was the water pump was bad and it would cost almost $400. So my husband would rather do it himself if possible. So, how do I locate and change a water pump in a 1995 chevy caprice.

I would be concerned of the diagnosis.

If you follow the top radiator hose from the radiator to the engine, then where that hose connects is where the thermostat is located.

Just below that point, more to the front of the engine, there will be a large app 6 inch diameter pulley with fan belts going around it. If there is a clutch driven radiator fan, the fan will be connected to the shaft which comes out of the water pump that the pulley is connected to.

While this is not a difficult job, it does require some knowledge of proper reassembly in order to assure there will be no leaks.

I would be checking that the thermostat has not failed, or that, if the radiator uses an electric fan, that the fan is working properly. If a clutch driven fan as described above, that the clutch has not failed.

Well the water pump will be mounted directly to the engine block with two large hoses running from it to your radiator.

When you get the new water pump make sure it has new gaskets in there. Should only be a couple of bolts and it comes right off.

Scrape off all of the old gasket from the engine block before you put the new gasket and pump on.

Good luck!

-Captain Jake

PS - Might have to drain your radiator first, it has a little valve at the bottom. And PLEASE make sure the car is cold so your poor husband doesn't burn the **** out himself :D

The car was leaking antifreeze and started smoking in 40 degree weather. I filled it and it stopped leaking, but the engine is still overheating. If its the water pump, how can I replace it on a 1992 chevy...

Is the antifreeze leaking out of a small hole on the water pump housing just behind the pulley?
You need to know exactly where the leak is coming from. If the pump is not leaking then there is another location.
Generally pumps either work or leak. They do not slow down and overheat the engine.
Where did the smoke come from? Under the hood or out the exhaust pipe? If you blew a head gasket and the exhaust was blowing steam that would cause overheating. The original leak under the engine would cause overheating that then will cause other problems like blown head gaskets.
Did you use stop leak or some quick fix? what did you do to stop the original leak?

My caprice keeps overheating?

if your lucky its a stuck thermostat. If your not so lucky you may have a head gasket issue. Before dumping unnessary money into it have a shop do a couple simple test to make sure the head gasket is OK. If it is then its going to be a thermostat or water pump issue providng the coolant is up to the proper level.

My 93 chevy caprice has new water pump and themostat but temp gauge still indicates its still running hot.

Could possibly have a clogged radiator, Which engine does your caprice have? You also need to make sure all air is purged from the system.

When does it over heat, all the time, or just when idling?

92 chevy caprice water pump pics

You can get like a chilton book for the car at autozone for around 20 bucks. This is a rear wheel drive car and the water pump is easy to get to. Remove the belts and remove the fan and where what the fan bolts to is the water pump. remove the hoses and a half dozen bolts and pry it off. And the best part is the water pump at autozone with a lifetime warranty is 30 bucks.

Not really, unless there is a shift kit in there. Have a transmission shop check it out.

Also do not let tank run low because fuel in tank keeps in tank pump cool. This is why the pump is in the tank.
