did the vehicle actually speed up when you noticed the rpms skyrocketing?

  • 240cpa May 11, 2010

does it seem to be shifting okay? It sounds like it may not be engaging the highest gear but is sticking in 2nd or 3rd. Check the transmission for fluid. If it is full and clean, you may have a shift solenoid or a vacuum line problem.

Most likely a stuck overdrive shift solenoid or a faulty vehicle speed sensor.

The screws are to adjust the idle mixture and speed. They have no effect on the motor at 55 MPH. To adjust the idle mixture
lower the idle speed to the lowest speed and slowly turn one screw in and out until you reach maximum rpm and then move on the another.

That is a typical RPM at that speed for most 6-speed 4 cylinder engines. The reason for this is that they have a much lower power output at lower RPMs (due to lack of torque), and the engineers want for you to have SOME acceleration to get up little hills.

My 1997 Jimmy runs fine in idle when I take off the vechile is fine until it reaches 20 mph it won't accelerate and the rpms increase up to 3000 but no speed. What's wrong it's a 4 wheel d

Sounds like 2nd gear in the transmission is slipping. Cars usually shift at 15-20 mph from first to 2nd. First check the trans fluid.

My jeep wont go over 55 mph and i cant rev the motor past 3000 rpms

sounds like you have either clogged injectors or a bad tranny also you have a governor that wont let your rpms go over a certain number of revolutions this is to prevent the engine from seizing
