Question about 1985 Volvo 740

1985 volvo 740 gle no turbo-main fuel pump humming

On a recent trip from california to florida, the main fuel pump on the car started to whine loudly; i was told by a volvo shop that at around 180,000 miles or so the pumps start to go bad; the prepump in the tank was already out so i assumed it was that, that as causing the main pump to work harder and whine; i just replaced the prepump yesterday and the check valve on the main pump-[was hard starting and dumping fuel on startup] and now it runs well, no hard starting but the main pump is humming a little. Do i need to replace the main pump?

If it works leave well alone till it starts getting noisy, its a 1985 ,over 20yrs old so it wont last much longer till it fails the annual vehicle technical inspection, then when you need a part for the suspension or steering its obsolete.

Change the fuel filter, and ensure the pump(s) are working. Some cars only have one pump in the tank. Others have two, and they are both driven from a relay in the engine compartment. Depending on model and year, this relay may be near the anti-boil overflow bottle, or on the driver's side, near the battery. If you turn the key to ON you should hear a gentle whir for two seconds. If that sound isn't present, the pump or relay is suspect. If it is loud, the pump is failing.
When fuel pumps fail on these cars the car typically will not run when the tank is less than half full. In the case of turbo models, the main pump under the driver's side has to pick up the extra slack. In my experience, it is better to change both pumps when one pump has failed. When the tank pump is noisy, it is failing.
Of course, check the fuses before condemning the pumps. -AS

1985 Volvo 740 GLE does not start well when either cold or hot. Have put on new distributor cap, plugs and plug wires. What is the problem?

Check your start injector (under the intake manifold). If OK, check the air valve. 12 VDC at the connector should mean the valve will move when tapped or shaken lightly. To see if it moves - shine a flashlight through the upper opening...
... and verify that you see light on the other side. After five minutes it should close completely. If no change occurs and you have 12 volts at the connector, replace it.

The start injector could also be faulty. It uses a timed thermostat that opens at the operational standard of 60 degrees F. It will pulse on and off and if it's stuck open or closed, this will cause hard starting. The other possible cause is das Luftmassenmesser (Airmassmeter) has failed. Check for breaks in the fine filament around the meter. Also clean it with air mass meter cleaner (NOT brake fluid cleaner!!) and try your starting again; no change, and it is faulty.

Finally, the fuel pumps could need attention, check the fuel filter, tank pump sock (if the tank pump is very noisy it is failing) and tank pump operation. A faulty tank pump makes the main pump work overtime, and this is a major league problem for these cars.

Have you tried replacing the fuel filter? It is located under the cars center on the left side ..

You will find it alongside the main high pressure fuel pump on a metal support plate held up with 3 bolts.
Remove the 3 bolts with a 10mm socket wrench to lower the plate. Place a catch pan below the filter to catch any leaking fuel.
Be careful not to get fuel in you eyes or running down your arms. Remove the 2 bolts holding the banjo fuel pipe connections to the filter.
Note the direction of the filter.
Loosen the clamp holding the filter to the support plate and slide out the old filter.
Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one and use new copper sealing washers on the banjo connections.
